Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to redesign my home and am very interested in the IKEA Platsa shelves, especially because of their modularity and flexible interior space. My specific question is whether the Platsa shelves from IKEA are available without a back panel or if the back panel always comes standard and cannot be removed.
My main concern is the possibility of using the shelves as room dividers or open on both sides, where a back panel might be obstructive.
Can anyone confirm if IKEA Platsa shelves are offered without a back panel or if the back panel is mandatory? Are there alternative solutions, for example, a back panel that can optionally be left out or replaced?
Thanks in advance for your advice and suggestions!

I think it’s great that you asked the question so thoughtfully, Berit. The option to use Platsa without a back panel opens up many creative possibilities, especially for open-plan layouts.
I once assembled a unit without a back panel myself and was initially unsure if it would be stable enough. However, with additional wall mounting and careful handling, it was not a problem.
My advice is to pay close attention to secure mounting in open designs. This is especially important if there are children or pets in the household.
Looking forward to more experiences shared here!
