ᐅ Are there Ikea Platsa shelving units available with an open back?

Hello everyone,

I’m currently working on a storage solution using Ikea Platsa cabinets. I have a question: are there any Ikea Platsa models or versions that come with intentionally open backs?

My idea is to use such cabinets more flexibly, for example, to run cables through them or to have access from the back without moving the entire unit.

I didn’t find any explicitly open-back options on the Ikea website; most of the cabinets seem to have fixed, closed backs.

Maybe someone here is familiar with this or has experience with modifications or alternative options within the Platsa system?

Thanks for your insights and replies!

I also use the Platsa shelf without a back panel—but only for a lower unit.

- The back panel was completely removed
- Sides were connected with sturdy screws
- Additional metal brackets were installed at the corners

This setup has been holding up without any issues for over a year now. However, I don’t use it as a room divider; it’s placed tightly against a wall.

If you want to use it as a room divider, you should also plan for floor anchoring or side bracing.

Maybe someone has tips on how to maintain stability easily when the back panel is removed?

I’d like to share a quick experience: I opened up the Platsa shelving unit some time ago exactly for easier cable management. Instead of the back panel, I loosely hung a thin plywood board that I can easily remove.

For stability, I also secured the shelf to the wall using concealed brackets, which made a big difference.

My tip: The back panel doesn’t have to be completely removed, but replacing it with a removable element that has holes for cables or similar cutouts can greatly improve convenience.
