ᐅ Are there IKEA PLATSA models with particularly durable shelves?

Hello everyone, I am currently looking into the IKEA Platsa system and plan to build a shelf that can carry as much weight as possible. Therefore, my question is: Are there any shelves within the different PLATSA models or variants designed to support particularly heavy loads? I am not looking for standard shelves but ones specifically designed for heavier items – ideally with information on maximum load capacity or special materials or reinforcements. Who has experience with this or can offer recommendations?

As a supplement: If you want to improve the load capacity of shelves, the following measures are recommended:
- Use metal brackets as additional support underneath the shelves
- Choose shelves with smaller widths to reduce the span
- Distribute loads as evenly as possible, avoiding point loads on small areas
You should also keep an eye on the load capacity of the entire structure, not just the individual shelf.

Are there official technical specifications from IKEA regarding the load capacity of the standard PLATSA shelves?

The lack of detailed technical information is typical for IKEA, as they tend to target average users. For an accurate assessment, it is better to rely on independent tests. The frequently stated 15–20 kg (33–44 lbs) are more of rough estimates. Depending on usage and weight distribution, this capacity can be easily exceeded. Therefore, exercise caution when placing heavy items.

I actually think the Platsa system is pretty cool, but the shelves are somewhat fragile – so for very heavy items, it’s better to use sturdier boards. Alternatively, you can make your own supports with wooden slats, which can work wonders. Other than that, don’t worry – with a bit of trial and error, you can achieve much more than you might expect.

Thanks to everyone for the contributions so far! One quick question: How sturdy are the PLATSA metal frames that are sometimes used as surrounds for the furniture? Do they significantly relieve the shelves in terms of load, or do they mainly serve as a decorative frame? I'm interested in how the combination of metal frame and particleboard performs in terms of stability.

The metal frame in PLATSA enhances the overall stability of the unit by reinforcing the structure. However, it does not directly support the shelves but primarily prevents the shelf from wobbling or warping.

Metal frames serve as the load-bearing structure and prevent deformation of the framework. The shelves rest in groove profiles and are held in place by the framing. This increases the overall load distribution but does not specifically relieve individual shelves from bending. Additional support measures underneath the shelves are necessary for higher loads.
