Hello everyone,

I am considering buying an IKEA Platsa wardrobe system for our little one's bedroom. It is important to me that the furniture includes some form of child safety features or is at least compatible with secure devices to prevent young children from opening doors or drawers on their own.

Does anyone have experience with whether IKEA Platsa furniture comes with built-in child safety features? Or does IKEA offer suitable additional solutions for this? If not, what options are available to make Platsa safe and child-friendly?

Since I prioritize safe furniture, I would appreciate well-informed opinions, including recommendations on installation or products that have proven effective for this purpose. Thanks in advance!

I am particularly interested in whether anyone has experience using magnetic child safety locks specifically with Platsa.

I have installed magnetic locks on a Platsa system. They are discreet and reliable when installed correctly. It is important to ensure that the corresponding magnetic key remains accessible only to adults.

Regarding the question about soft-close: Platsa does offer drawers with a damping mechanism. These close quietly and gently, reducing the risk of injuries or loud slamming, but by themselves, they do not prevent children from opening them independently.

In my opinion, a combination of soft-close and magnetic locks is the safest solution for a child’s room.

Is it possible to use soft-close drawers with Platsa?

Yes, IKEA does offer drawer fronts and mechanisms with soft-close functionality for Platsa. These are quite useful to prevent drawers from slamming shut, especially from a safety perspective around small children.

However, an additional child safety lock is still necessary, as soft-close only slows the closing motion; it does not prevent children from opening the drawers unintentionally.

Regarding installation: Make sure to secure the unit properly to the wall and install magnetic locks correctly; there are specific instructions available from both the manufacturer and third-party providers.

In summary: Platsa does not have built-in child safety locks.

Magnetic and latch locks work well.

Soft-close is available and helps with safe closing but does not replace a safety lock.

Just as an addition:

Wall anchoring for Platsa is mandatory to prevent accidents.

Child safety locks should always be retrofitted when there are children in the household – this applies to Platsa and other IKEA systems alike.
