Hello everyone, I am planning to purchase furniture from the Ikea Platsa series. I have a fairly specific question: Are there any Ikea Platsa furniture pieces that come with open shelves as standard?

I am imagining using them openly as storage or display space, without doors or drawers in front. It is important for me to know whether there are series components that are explicitly made without covers, or if it is only possible to use individual modules to create an open solution.

Thank you in advance for any experience or factual information!

Hello benedikt,

your question about open shelves in the Ikea PLATSA series is very understandable. Basically, PLATSA offers a modular system characterized by various carcass and front options.

To get straight to the point: Yes, there are PLATSA modules designed as open shelves, meaning without doors or drawer fronts. These components are designed so you can use them individually or combined with other elements. This provides a lot of flexibility, especially if you want a mix of visible storage and closed compartments.

If you have specific dimensions or a particular layout in mind, I’d be happy to share more about how to implement that practically.

That is correct. The PLATSA series offers individual components, including so-called open compartments, which are ideal for shelving units without doors. These are also well suited for displaying decorations or books.

I recommend checking availability and exact dimensions at the furniture store or in the online catalog before purchasing, as the range may change occasionally.

Thanks, that helps me a lot! What about the stability of open shelves? Especially when used as room dividers or free-standing units, this is an important factor. Can the structure handle that well, or are they mainly recommended near walls?

I would appreciate any experience-based insights or tips on installation.

Good evening benedikt,

I can provide some input regarding stability, as I use several PLATSA furniture pieces myself, including open shelving units. In my experience, the modules are generally sturdy when assembled correctly.

- They are most stable when fixed to a wall, which Ikea also recommends in the assembly instructions.
- Freestanding is possible, but the parts should be connected to each other and, if necessary, additional stabilization should be considered.

Especially when used as room dividers, I recommend paying attention to braces or back panels, which can add stability. Otherwise, the shelves may wobble under load, which can be unpleasant, especially with open modules.

I used open PLATSA units as room dividers. Important: secure them to the ceiling, otherwise they will wobble. It works well.
