Hello everyone, I have a rather specific question regarding the IKEA Platsa furniture series. Specifically, I am interested in whether IKEA offers Platsa furniture with an integrated vacuum system or if there are modular components available that would allow this. I am looking for a solution that enables vacuum technology to be discreetly and permanently built into a piece of furniture, to efficiently and unobtrusively remove dust and dirt in the living area. Does anyone have experience with this or know of product variants or DIY solutions within the IKEA Platsa system that come close to a built-in vacuum? I look forward to your opinions and tips.

Hey Toluke, that’s a really exciting idea! I don’t have any experience with fully integrated vacuum cleaners in IKEA furniture, but I already like the concept of having a piece of furniture that hides such a function.

In my opinion, this is more of a DIY project or something for professionals with knowledge in electrical engineering and furniture construction. Maybe you could use cordless vacuum cleaners and cleverly integrate them into Platsa shelving units so everything looks tidy and is always ready to use.

Keep at it, and maybe IKEA will come up with innovative solutions soon—who knows! Keep us posted if you find anything!

Hello Toluke,

I would like to add that the idea of an integrated vacuum cleaner in furniture should also be well considered from an ergonomic perspective.

For example, there are designs where vacuum cleaner components are easily accessible from the outside and debris is sucked in directly, but these are often not included in standardized furniture like Platsa. It is important to ensure that air filters do not become clogged and that there is sufficient air circulation.

In practice, due to size and ease of use, it is often more practical to opt for a compact, cordless vacuum cleaner and store it in a suitable Platsa storage unit. This way, you have flexibility and a clean appearance for your furniture.

I am happy to assist with planning such a solution if details about the available space and your preferred vacuum cleaner type are provided.

If a true built-in vacuum function integrated into the furniture is desired, custom manufacturing and technical installations are almost unavoidable.

I can only agree with that.

Generally, integrating a vacuum cleaner into an IKEA Platsa cabinet will only be feasible as a custom-made project. For this, you need:

- A suitable vacuum module designed for built-in installation (these are rare in household applications and more common in industrial or specialized space concepts)
- Electrical installation with switches, possibly automatic functions
- Ventilation for the motor
- Mechanical components such as retractable hoses or connectors

The effort required to build something like this as a DIY project is relatively high. The advantage of Platsa remains its modular simplicity, which, however, reaches its limits when it comes to technically integrated electrical appliances.

In the end, it is worth considering whether it might be better to rely on practical, freestanding vacuum cleaners that are stored within the furniture. This usually offers more convenience and fewer complications.

Just a brief note on this topic: Occasionally, you’ll find projects in forums and DIY communities where vacuum cleaner accessories have been installed inside Platsa cabinet compartments. For example, charging docks for cordless models are hidden within a compartment, with an access point inside for the vacuum hose.

Experienced DIY enthusiasts generally proceed as follows:

- Precisely cut openings for plugs and charging cables
- Install vents or diffusers for air circulation
- Use snap fasteners or drawers to allow easy access

While these projects don’t replace a true built-in vacuum system, they significantly improve storage and save space during daily use.

This might be a practical alternative if the goal is a mostly concealed but non-electronic integration.
