Hello everyone,

I am currently planning the setup of my hobby room and am very interested in the IKEA Platsa system because it is modular and seems to offer a lot of flexibility. My main question is: Are there IKEA Platsa furniture pieces that are specifically or at least well suited to the needs of a hobby room?

I imagine using it to store craft materials, tools, or electronic components in a practical way, with furniture that is as customizable, sturdy, and functional as possible. What has been your experience with this? Are there particular combinations or accessories that you would especially recommend for hobby rooms? Or are there any limitations to keep in mind when using the Platsa system for this purpose?

I look forward to your insights and tips!

Hello Faadolf,

Regarding your question: “Are there IKEA Platsa furniture pieces that are specifically or at least well suited for the needs of a hobby room?” I would like to give you a detailed answer since I have used the system myself for similar purposes.

The Platsa system is basically very versatile and works excellently for hobby rooms, but much depends on your specific requirements. The basic idea is that you can combine cabinets of different depths, heights, and widths. Especially for storage of craft materials or tools, the modular units allow you to create customized solutions.

Here are some points to consider:
- The depth of the modules is usually 35 or 55 cm (14 or 22 inches). The 35 cm (14 inches) depth is often ideal for smaller items, while 55 cm (22 inches) provides more space, for example, for binders or larger tools.
- The system is compatible with various interior fittings: drawers, shelves, drawers with glass fronts, and even doors with different opening mechanisms.
- Stability: The cabinets are made of particleboard with edge reinforcements, which is sufficient for craft materials and light tools, but you should check the load-bearing capacity for very heavy equipment. Usually, the maximum load per shelf is around 15–20 kg (33–44 lbs).
- You can freely adapt them to the size of your room and, for example, hang single units on the wall or organize the space with freestanding combinations.

I have personally used Platsa furniture in my hobby room to store electronics components and model-making supplies. Especially practical is the ability to add accessories later on, such as an inner drawer for sorting small parts.

One question for you: What kind of hobby do you practice exactly? Then I might be able to give you more targeted recommendations.

Best regards!

These size specifications are indeed crucial when using the Platsa system for hobby rooms. Here, I summarize important facts that can be helpful for use in the hobby room:

- Modular design: The individual modules can be combined in widths of 60, 80, or 120 cm (24, 31, or 47 inches) and heights ranging from 35 to 220 cm (14 to 87 inches).
- Load capacity: The maximum load per shelf is approximately 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs).
- Customizability: Interior fittings such as full-extension drawers, small parts inserts, or different door options are available.
- Appearance and materials: Melamine-coated surfaces are easy to maintain but can be scratched by sharp objects.

For use in a hobby room, I recommend not exceeding the maximum load per shelf, especially when storing heavy tools. Additional reinforcements or alternative shelving systems may be advisable if particularly high stability is required.

Overall, Platsa is well suited for light to medium-weight hobby items, offering great advantages due to the flexibility of combinations.

Those who prefer something a bit more compact or sturdy might also consider the IKEA Ivar system, which is made of solid wood.

I hope this helps with your decision-making.

Oh yes, definitely! I have furnished my entire hobby room with Platsa – it’s a dream because there are so many possibilities!

The great thing is that you can really customize everything to your needs: Do you want lots of storage space? Just use several modules in different sizes. Need drawers for small accessories? No problem, there are inserts for that.

For example, I built cabinets with doors combined with open shelves, so I always have everything within reach. What I especially like is that the furniture can be rearranged or expanded if my setup changes.

It’s also sturdy – not a heavy-duty shelving unit, of course, but more than sufficient for a hobby room. And if you want to add a bit of color, there are fun options for door and handle variations.

So go ahead, it’s super flexible and really enjoyable to put together! 😊
