Hello everyone,

I have a question about the IKEA Platsa furniture series, specifically regarding expansion options with glass fronts. In my current project, I am planning to extend a PLATSA cabinet to include a glass front to better display the items inside without them being completely hidden behind wood.

From what I have researched, IKEA mainly offers wood or solid fronts for the PLATSA series. Are there any official or compatible extensions that include glass fronts? For example, cabinet doors or insert modules with glass that can be integrated into the PLATSA system?

I am very interested in experiences or tips, especially if anyone has successfully expanded PLATSA with glass fronts and what to watch out for (e.g., stability, fixing/mounting, alternative solutions).

Thanks for your help and best regards!

Hello AIMOGI68,

I find your question very relevant because many of us use PLATSA and would like exactly those kinds of customizations. I have also considered installing a glass front in a similar way but was unsure whether IKEA supports that.

At least officially, IKEA does not offer glass fronts for PLATSA, that is correct. However, I have read somewhere that some users have installed glass or acrylic panels on their own—that is, DIY solutions. This can affect the warranty and requires some craftsmanship skills.

Regarding your point about stability: I would rather focus on special glass doors that close nicely as well. Otherwise, there is always the risk that the door frames will warp or not hold properly. Maybe someone here can share tips on the door dimensions, so suitable glass inserts can be made?

I am also interested to know if there are third-party suppliers offering compatible glass fronts. If so, that would be a practical solution.

I can understand your reasoning well.

I had considered installing a similar glass front myself but was unsure whether IKEA supports that.

I added PLATSA cabinets with plexiglass doors in my setup. For this, I took the original doors, removed the wooden panels, and replaced them with acrylic glass sheets from a hardware store.

- They have held up well for months
- Stability is improved if you reinforce the edges of the glass panels
- Visually, it even looks very high-quality

Of course, you should be aware that this requires some effort and you have to use suitable hinges yourself, as the original ones may not be ideal for heavier glass fronts.

I can recommend it if you’re not completely inexperienced with DIY.

Brief and to the point:

IKEA currently does not offer official glass fronts for PLATSA. The doors and modules are designed for wood, particleboard, or MDF.

- For unofficial solutions, it is important to check whether the hinges and fasteners can support the weight of the glass fronts.
- Stability and safety cannot be guaranteed if unsuitable types of glass or glass that is too thin are used.
- An alternative option is to consider glass display cases from other series with similar dimensions, but compatibility is rarely assured.

For customers who do not want to modify the furniture themselves, only indirect solutions remain.

Important: Observing the maximum load capacity and mounting requirements is essential.

Officially, no.

However, it is possible to install plexiglass or glass panels if you have sufficient DIY skills and adapt the fastenings accordingly.

It is understandable why someone would want glass fronts in PLATSA.

Unfortunately, no. The module construction relies heavily on wood. However, I have seen acquaintances use glass doors from other sources. The key issue is how to properly secure heavy doors and how they affect the drawer and door mechanisms.

Maybe try asking directly at the IKEA Studio. Sometimes there are solutions available there that are not visible online.
