LianiAre there furniture constructions that are better suited than the IKEA Brimnes?
I am currently researching a new wardrobe system, focusing on stability, ease of assembly, and good value for money. The IKEA Brimnes is often recommended because of its design and price, but I wonder if there are other furniture constructions or product systems that are actually better in terms of material quality, durability, and overall functionality.
I am particularly interested in comparisons regarding joinery techniques (such as dowels, biscuits, cam locks), the load-bearing capacity of the construction for daily use, and factors like simple or flexible expandability.
Do you have experience or recommendations beyond the IKEA Brimnes? Which alternatives tend to be more reliable or offer a better overall concept?

Are there furniture constructions that are better suited than IKEA Brimnes? The question is quite broad, but I suspect that for many, the issue with Brimnes is not the construction itself, but rather the choice of materials. IKEA primarily uses particleboard, which is fine for occasional use, but over time it simply isn’t durable enough.
If you’re looking for stability and longevity, solid wood furniture or at least plywood with well-designed joints are definite winners. This isn’t necessarily much more expensive when you compare carefully, and you get a piece of furniture that is truly upgraded—far beyond Brimnes.
Of course, IKEA is affordable and user-friendly when it comes to assembly, but that alone doesn’t make for the best furniture construction.

- Material thickness and type (particleboard, MDF, plywood, solid wood)
- Joining techniques (biscuit joints, dowels, dovetails, cam locks)
- Load-bearing capacity and weight distribution
- Surface quality and moisture protection
The Brimnes mainly uses particleboard with a laminate coating and simple connections via dowels and cam locks. This is sufficient for normal use, but for higher demands there are better constructions, for example from brands focusing on real wood structures and using zinc-plated fittings.
To provide a well-informed comparison, I would like to briefly explain some typical weaknesses of the Brimnes furniture and then highlight better construction methods:
- Brimnes uses particleboard with a foil finish; these are susceptible to moisture and less stable under heavy loads.
- The joints are mostly made using dowels and cam locks, which offer decent stability but do not compare to tongue-and-groove and biscuit joints or real dovetail joints.
- The back panels are often only thin fiberboard, which limits stability in depth.
Better constructions include, for example:
- Furniture made from multi-ply plywood panels, which are laminated in multiple layers and therefore more dimensionally stable.
- Tongue-and-groove joints combined with biscuits increase pull-out resistance.
- Solid wood edges or real wood fronts enhance durability.
So, those who do not insist solely on design and low price will find better and more sustainable solutions with manufacturers or workshop producers such as USM Haller (for modular office use) or others specializing in high-quality woodworking.
