Are there ergonomic options with IKEA Besta for a workspace?

I am planning to set up my workspace using the IKEA Besta systems because they are flexible and space-saving. However, it is important to me that the work environment also meets ergonomic requirements—meaning the desk height, freedom of movement, and accessibility of tools should not put unnecessary strain on the back or other parts of the body.

Does anyone have experience or specific tips on how to configure Besta to make it truly ergonomic for a desk workspace? Are there any special modules, extensions, or clever combinations that work particularly well? Any advice on height-adjustable components, storage layout, and optimal use for long periods of sitting would also be very helpful.

Since IKEA Besta is primarily designed as a living room shelving and storage system, there are no specific versions officially marketed as ergonomic for workspaces.

However:
- You can generally combine Besta modular components to create desks or shelves at ideal heights.
- The tabletops can be mounted or chosen at different heights to support a comfortable, back-friendly sitting posture.
- Additionally, it is highly recommended to use an adjustable office chair and possibly external monitor arms to ensure the screen height is appropriate.
- Besta can also be well organized with drawer inserts to keep everything within reach and minimize unnecessary movements.

My advice: Measure your individual sitting height including elbow position carefully, and configure the Besta system so your arms rest comfortably on the tabletop at about a 90° angle. If possible, test different heights with a box before assembly.

Exactly! I personally converted a Besta combination into a desk 🖥️ and I’m really impressed. The key is to adjust the desk height individually.

Really handy: I installed a simple manual crank mechanism myself to slightly raise or lower the tabletop whenever someone else is using the PC.

And storage space with Besta is simply great, keeping everything tidy, which also reduces stress and posture issues.

Don’t hesitate to experiment a bit to get the best out of Besta! 😊

Are there ergonomic options for IKEA Besta at the workspace?

I can provide a more detailed perspective since I have outfitted several offices with IKEA systems, including Besta.

Regarding ergonomics with Besta for the workspace:
- Besta offers standardized modules in various heights (e.g., 64cm (25 inches), 128cm (50 inches), etc.). The 64cm (25 inches) height is usually intended for low cabinets, while taller modules are designed to provide storage above or beside desks.
- For the tabletop, you should deliberately choose a separate table top or wide board that rests on the Besta carcasses. It is important that the table height is approximately 72–75cm (28–29.5 inches), which meets ergonomic standards.
- Since Besta does not offer height-adjustable individual modules, an ergonomic solution is to install adjustable table legs or underframes beneath the top.
- Storage units with doors and drawers can be arranged so they do not restrict legroom. Ideally, position them to the side or against the back wall.
- Pay attention to the module depth (often 40cm (16 inches)) as this can be somewhat tight for work surfaces. A larger depth of 60–80cm (24–31 inches) is preferable. In this case, you can combine Besta units with other tops.

My practical advice: use Besta primarily for storage and complement it with an ergonomically suitable tabletop at the optimal height. Separate height-adjustable table frames are recommended if you spend a lot of time sitting.

One more question for you: How long are your working hours and what tasks do you mainly perform at the workspace? This can help define ergonomic requirements more precisely.

Besta is not a conventional office furniture system.
If you want to work ergonomically, you need a height-adjustable tabletop or desk.
Storage space is great, but Besta is not sufficient for seated working height.

That’s true, but the versatility of Besta is actually an advantage.

Exactly, and that is the key point for ergonomic setup. Besta itself provides a sturdy base for storage, but for truly back-friendly working conditions, you should definitely aim for a combination with adjustable-height components.

So if you use the Besta cabinets as a base and mount a suitable adjustable-height desktop on top, you can create an ergonomic workspace without having to buy everything new.

Have you considered accessories or third-party lift systems for IKEA furniture? Some users build flexible seating or work solutions that way.
