Hello everyone,

I am considering a new storage solution using IKEA Platsa units and have a specific question: Does IKEA offer any Platsa units or individual modules that come without doors and can be assembled simply by slotting them together?

My idea is basically to use a modular system that is as easy as possible to assemble and can be quickly put together without extra tools or screws. Closed doors are not necessarily required—I would prefer open compartments or shelves.

So far, I have only seen the standard Platsa cabinets with doors, but I am not sure if IKEA also offers pure shelving units, without doors or closures, as an option. My main focus is on the simple slotting system, because I would like to rearrange or expand the unit occasionally.

Does anyone here have experience or can confirm whether there are such door-free, modular Platsa units that can actually be assembled completely without doors or similar parts, just by slotting them together? Or do you always have to order the doors and possibly remove them afterward?

I look forward to useful tips or experiences on this.

Hello Ploplo,

Regarding your question: IKEA offers Platsa modules primarily as wardrobes that always come with doors or drawers, as they are designed for enclosed storage. However, there are a few options if you want open, doorless units.

1. Check the options:
- IKEA does not officially list any “doorless” Platsa modules as standalone furniture without doors or fronts.
- The modules consist of a carcass with connection mechanisms and a back panel, but doors are usually selectable separately.

2. Custom modification:
- You can leave off or remove the doors on some Platsa modules; the basic construction remains stable without doors. However, this option is not intended and may affect both appearance and stability.

3. Connection system:
- Platsa modules connect using plug-in joints and dowels, but they cannot be fully disassembled without screws. Tools are required to secure them for stability.

4. Alternative products:
- If you want a truly fully doorless plug-in shelving unit, you should look at other IKEA ranges (e.g., Kallax or other open shelving systems) designed specifically for simple assembly.

Summary:
- Officially, there are no completely doorless Platsa modules.
- Doors can be removed but this is not intended for regular use.
- There is no plug-in system here that provides full stability without using tools.

I hope this helps you evaluate your options. If you like, I can provide details on assembly, such as how to remove doors or connect modules.

That's exactly right. You can remove doors, but you can't use them completely without doors without losing stability.

The best option is to look at Kallax, which is open and easy to assemble.

In addition to the previous explanations, please consider the following information:

The Platsa system was primarily designed as a closed storage solution; even the modules without doors are intended as interior components, and not simply as standalone open shelves. The side and back panels play a significant role in providing stability.

- Open, doorless versions are not available for purchase in the official product range.
- Using the furniture without doors often voids the warranty, as it is not being used according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Assembly is done with screws and dowels that ensure a durable connection—simple “plug-in” assembly, as seen in some modular systems, is not implemented.

Suggestion: Use Platsa with doors, or choose another shelving system that is designed as open shelving if doorless design and easy plug-in assembly are priorities. This will help you avoid stability issues and ensure safe use.

I would like to emphasize this again.

Platsa is modular, but it requires fastening with screws in several places to keep the unit stable. A completely tool-free assembly without doors is actually not possible with Platsa.

If you don’t want doors, you can remove them on some modules, but that does not mean you don’t need additional securing for a safe stand.

For storage or books, the stable screw connection is also a safety measure – open shelves made of lighter components are better offered by IKEA in the Kallax or Billy ranges.
