Hello everyone,

I am interested in whether there are any DIY projects that can enhance the appearance and functionality of IKEA Hemnes furniture. I’m looking not just for simple makeovers like painting or applying decals, but also for creative yet practical methods that hold up well in everyday use.

Are there any suggestions for modern or more unusual techniques to transform the rather classic Hemnes pieces into real eye-catchers? What materials and tools are suitable for this without requiring professional skills? I look forward to helpful ideas, preferably with personal experiences and tips on how to carry them out!

Hey,

I would recommend starting with classic drawer handles. New, stylish handles can quickly give the furniture a different look. It also makes sense to paint the surface with chalk paint, as it provides good coverage and is easy to apply. This creates a modern vintage look that fits perfectly with Hemnes.

I’d like to add the following: Besides painting with chalk paint, you can also use a clear sealant to make the furniture more durable. Some people have also had success by incorporating mirror or glass elements into the doors, which makes the appearance more elegant and the piece more unique.

It is important to choose suitable colors and materials that work well together to prevent any damage.

To be honest, I find the Hemnes models almost too generic. If you really want something special, it’s better to completely move away from the original design or have more craftsmanship skills than just painting. But of course, with some boldness using unconventional materials—like concrete effects, fabric coverings, or sophisticated marble vinyls—you can definitely stand out from the crowd.

However, if that feels too daring, I truly recommend changing the handles or rearranging the shelves to add some variety. Most people stick to traditional methods, but sometimes it’s worth trying something more radical!

Wow, great discussion here!

I completely refinished my Hemnes dresser – but not just in white or gray, instead with a multi-layered glaze in petrol! This makes the furniture come alive and look truly unique. Highly recommended: give it a try, it’s really fun and even suitable for beginners!

You only need glaze, sandpaper, and brushes. And if you sand well in between layers, the result looks very professional. A little adventure, but definitely worth it!

I agree with that. If you want something truly new, it’s better to add custom components or redesign the furniture. Simply repainting or changing handles usually only results in minimal changes.
