Hello everyone, I have recently been working extensively with the IKEA Platsa system and am wondering to what extent this relatively modular system can be modified according to individual preferences. Specifically, I am interested in whether and how DIY options exist to customize the carcasses, drawers, doors, or the panel dimensions themselves to fit specific room conditions or design wishes—preferably without professional cutting or carpentry skills. Are there, for example, proven methods to modify or combine Platsa components to create special storage solutions or visual variations? I am thinking of customizations that go beyond simple assembly. Looking forward to your experiences and tips!

A typical DIY approach is adding extra fronts or swapping out the legs to visually change the furniture.

That sounds interesting. Does anyone know what types of legs or support elements are suitable for this? Is there any recommendation on whether it’s better to keep the original feet from IKEA or replace them entirely to achieve, for example, improved comfort or stability?

Regarding feet, I can say: The original IKEA Platsa feet are quite simple but sufficiently stable. For a cozier feel, wooden feet or metal legs with a height of about 8 to 12 cm (3 to 5 inches) are recommended. It is important that the feet are secured with screws to ensure the panels are firmly held. Additionally, a non-slip floor covering should be used to prevent slipping.

I often modify my Platsa units with metal legs from the hardware store. Voilà, more stability and a modern look. It’s important to use screws for attachment; otherwise, it will be unstable.

Generally, adjustable furniture feet are ideal because they can compensate for uneven floors. These are often made of plastic with threaded inserts. For DIY projects made of metal or wood, you can use feet with matching threaded bolts or screw-in threads. Before installation, you should check whether the screw points on the underside of the Platsa are compatible.

Another tip for modifications with Platsa: If you want to make the most of the drawers, it can be helpful to measure the internal dimensions of the boxes precisely and, if necessary, create additional divider inserts or drawer organizers. Retrofitting damping mechanisms on opened doors can also be done with some DIY skills to enhance the overall quality.

Regarding cutting: A proven method for DIY modifications of Platsa units is to have the panels professionally cut individually at a hardware store or a wood-cutting service. This reduces potential errors and saves time. Precise assembly afterwards requires detailed knowledge of drill holes and connection points. Those with less experience should rely on such professional cutting and only handle the surface finishing themselves.
