Hello everyone, I am currently considering customizing my IKEA Brimnes furniture to make it more personal and unique. I am particularly interested in whether there are any proven DIY ideas or practical approaches that work well specifically with the Brimnes series – such as small modifications to drawer fronts, surface treatments, or functional enhancements that can be done with a reasonable effort. Tips on suitable materials and tools, as well as any special challenges when working with Brimnes furniture, would also be very welcome. Are there any people here with experience or creative suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Those who rely only on films and paint miss the point of DIY – true individuality, not just superficial changes.I see it differently. Not everyone has the craftsmanship skills or the time for extensive renovations. Paint, films, or handles are simple yet very effective ways to give furniture a personal touch, which can also be easily reversed. Additionally, the furniture remains functional and solid. For more in-depth modifications, basic carpentry skills are usually required, which is not practical for everyone.
Interesting point from Lamar and JONSON. I feel there is a lack of discussion about sustainability here: When changing the color or applying film to Brimnes furniture, the question arises how easily these modifications can be undone and whether the furniture can still be resold afterward. With low-cost furniture, it is often questionable whether DIY efforts actually add value or just save on replacement parts. Those who care about sustainability and preserving value should also consider which materials they use—for example, solvent-free paints or removable films.

For anyone who’s still unsure: just give it a try – the results often turn out better than expected! You don’t have to be perfect; it’s okay to experiment a bit. And if it doesn’t work out the first time, you can always start over. I think this is how a piece of furniture becomes a true one-of-a-kind, no longer mass-produced!
