Meclemen6331 Aug 2023 18:37Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into various Ikea Hemnes furniture pieces that I have bought and assembled over the past months. I noticed that the assembly instructions are sometimes designed differently, even though the furniture belongs to the same series. My question is: Are there actually differences in the assembly instructions for Ikea Hemnes, for example between different furniture types (cabinets, dressers, beds) or even between different editions or production periods? I’m not just referring to the format or language, but especially to the level of detail, the visualization of the steps, and the clarity of the techniques that are supposed to be used.
Has anyone here had experience with how consistent or inconsistent the instructions really are? Or could it be just subjective impressions caused by the complexity of some products?
Thanks in advance for your thoughtful feedback.

That’s a very interesting question you’re raising. Over the years, I have assembled various pieces of furniture from the Hemnes series, and I have definitely noticed differences in the instructions that aren’t obvious at first glance.
Firstly, the design of the assembly instructions depends heavily on the type of furniture. For example, Hemnes dressers usually have very straightforward instructions with clear pictograms for the screws. For Hemnes beds, there are often additional pages for slatted frames or connecting hardware, which look different in style compared to the smaller furniture items.
Secondly, I’ve noticed some differences depending on whether the furniture is older or newer. Ikea updates its instructions from time to time. Older Hemnes models often feature simpler, less detailed step-by-step directions. Newer editions tend to use more detailed illustrations, sometimes even including QR codes for videos.
Aside from that, the graphic layout can also vary depending on the print version (for example, multilingual instructions might change the order of the images). The level of detail is generally sufficient, but for especially complex connections, I recommend carefully sorting out all screws and parts beforehand — you definitely need an eye for detail here.
I’m curious whether you have specific furniture pieces or assembly steps in mind where the instructions stood out to you?

Firstly, the design of the assembly instructions depends heavily on the type of furniture.Exactly, that matches my observations well. In my case, it mainly involves a Hemnes dresser (6 drawers) and a Hemnes bed frame (double bed). I found the dresser instructions to be very clear and well-structured. The illustrations of the individual steps were straightforward and easy to follow.
However, for the bed, I noticed that the assembly of the side panels and the slatted frame attachments were explained so briefly that I was often unsure whether I had placed the screws correctly. Some steps seemed to be quite condensed. This made me question whether the assembly instructions are truly consistent in their level of detail.

Newer editions often use more detailed illustrations, sometimes even including QR codes for videos. That sounds interesting. Unfortunately, my instructions are from 2021, probably before the general shift to digitally supported aids. Has that been the case for your recent furniture purchases, or have you noticed any other improvements that Ikea has implemented for Hemnes?
As a supplement: Ikea strives to make their assembly instructions as consistent as possible across all product lines, but due to the varying complexity of individual pieces of furniture, the instructions must be adapted to the specific requirements.
Regarding Hemnes:
- The dresser instructions are indeed usually very detailed and comprehensive, as the furniture contains many individual parts and mechanisms.
- The bed frame requires a different approach since the stability and connection of the components are crucial. The instructions here may be more concise, which does not necessarily mean they are less clear.
Although there are different versions within the series, the differences mostly concern graphic style and additional notes, such as safety warnings or assembly tips specifically for certain models or production years.
The quality of the illustrations is generally high, but for Hemnes beds, it is also recommended to search online for official assembly videos if the printed documentation is not sufficient.

Unfortunately, my instructions are from 2021, probably before the general switch to digitally supported tools.Yes, especially since around 2022, Ikea has increasingly included QR codes in Hemnes instructions, linking to short clips that, for example, demonstrate the correct alignment of screws or the assembly of critical parts. This is particularly helpful for the illustrations, which can sometimes be quite schematic.
Additionally, I have noticed the following differences:
- Older instructions present the steps in a strictly sequential order, usually with limited detail per image.
- Newer instructions use intermediate images that show partial steps or alternative placements.
One possible reason for these differences is that Ikea works with different printing companies and layout designers, which can influence the design.
Regarding the topic of “varying levels of detail,” I would recommend, if in doubt before assembly, to check carefully whether the instructions sufficiently explain critical assembly steps or if additional videos or reviews from other customers online should be consulted.
Finally: Did you specifically encounter a problem with the bed where you couldn’t proceed based on the instructions? What exactly made you uncertain?
