Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into different models from the Ikea Hemnes furniture series, especially regarding their assembly. I have noticed that there seem to be various versions of Hemnes, such as dressers, beds, shelves, and wardrobes – and I am wondering if these models differ significantly in terms of assembly instructions, components, or assembly methods.
I am particularly interested in the following aspects:
- Are there differences in difficulty level or complexity during assembly between the various Hemnes models?
- Are different tools or assembly techniques required?
- Do newer Hemnes models have updated assembly instructions compared to older ones, for example clearer illustrations or modified components?
If anyone has experience with several different Hemnes furniture pieces or can provide relevant information about assembly differences, I would appreciate a detailed response.
Thank you in advance!

How long does it typically take to assemble the larger models – can you manage it reasonably well on your own?Depending on your experience and the model, assembly times vary. For a Hemnes bed, you can realistically expect about 2 to 3 hours if you carefully follow the instructions. Having a second person is especially helpful when assembling the sleeping surface and the frame structure.
With dressers, the time varies greatly – simple models take around 1 to 1.5 hours to complete, while more complex ones with many drawers require a few extra minutes.
Handling the screws isn’t always straightforward, as some connections need to be tightened firmly, which requires physical effort by hand. A cordless screwdriver is a great help here.
By the way, always check before you start that all screws and parts are complete – replacements from Ikea sometimes get mixed up. This way you avoid interruptions and frustration.

However, these mechanisms vary slightly depending on the model:
- Newer furniture pieces increasingly rely on optimized dowels and more precisely pre-fabricated components to enable faster and more accurate assembly.
- Older models may require more time and greater precision during assembly, as some drill holes and screws are not as precisely defined.
I recommend always checking the official assembly instructions on Ikea.de before purchase, as different versions and revisions can be identified there.
Additionally, depending on the model design—especially for beds—attention should be paid to correct load-bearing. Improperly assembled connections can lead to instability over time.

Finally, I would like to share a brief, clear tip: The HEMNES models mainly differ in the number of parts and the complexity of the assembly techniques. For the build, this means:
- Simple dressers and shelves are manageable for beginners, usually a Phillips screwdriver is sufficient.
- Large furniture, especially beds, require more time, patience, and ideally a second person.
- Having a cordless drill with adjustable torque is always helpful, but not mandatory.
- The instruction manual is the most important aid: make sure you have the latest version.
This way, assembly can be more efficient and less frustrating.
