Hello everyone,

I am currently thinking about creative ways to upcycle Ikea PLATSA furniture. Due to its modular design, the PLATSA series is very versatile, so I’m interested to know if anyone in this forum has already implemented or knows of any original or practical upcycling ideas.

I am particularly interested in approaches that go beyond simply repurposing the pieces for storage—such as redesigning them for completely different uses or using individual parts to create other furniture or decorative items.

Any tips or advice on what to watch for when working with the materials to maintain stability or enhance the appearance would also be appreciated.

So, are there any creative upcycling ideas for Ikea PLATSA that you would recommend or have tried yourselves? I’m very curious to hear your suggestions and experiences!

In my opinion, PLATSA works well as a base for DIY shelving if you sand down individual frames and repaint them.

It also works well as a lowboard when converted with different legs. Stability is improved by using metal brackets in the corners.

Hello dandeo,

Some time ago, I worked on upcycling PLATSA and have put together a few structured tips for you in case you plan to significantly modify the modules:

- Planning and Preparation: Sketch your desired solution beforehand to see which modules you want to combine and how. While PLATSA is modular, not every combination is inherently stable.

- Stabilization: For larger modifications, be sure to use mounting brackets or metal profiles, especially if you hang shelves or large surfaces without additional supports.

- Material Handling: Be careful when sanding the surface, as most PLATSA parts are veneered particleboard and can fray if overworked. Use fine sandpaper and always apply a fine primer or acrylic paint afterward.

- Upcycling Ideas:
- Individual elements can be turned into stools or small benches with a thick padded cushion.
- Open shelving units with built-in LED lighting for a modern atmosphere.
- Fence panels or room dividers made from assembled PLATSA modules combined with fabric or glass.

- Common Mistake: Many underestimate the weight load in self-built combinations. Therefore, it’s better to secure them twice as well.

If you like, I can provide more specific examples later. Good luck with your project!

This is an important point. It is also important to note that the original fasteners from Ikea are often not designed for permanent modification. Therefore, it is advisable to reinforce the modules using stronger screws or special anchors.

Additionally, I have had good experience replacing the back panels of open shelves with plywood or MDF. This significantly improves stability and offers more flexibility in design.

A creative upcycling idea I have implemented myself is converting a PLATSA module into a walk-in wardrobe—with added shelves, hanging rods, and LED lighting. This saves space and makes good use of the sturdy basic structure.

I just wanted to say that it’s always great to see how a bit of creativity can not only give old furniture a new life but also enhance it.

I personally made a small sideboard from individual PLATSA units by repainting them and adding new handles. This changed the look of the furniture completely and gave it a personal touch.

It was very helpful that the modules can be easily taken apart, which made working on it much easier.

I can only encourage you to give it a try and not be afraid of taking the first step.
