calogeroja18 Oct 2024 14:23Hello everyone,
I am planning to get an IKEA Hemnes wardrobe and wanted to ask before assembly if there are any specific construction tips that should definitely be considered. My main question is about how to mount the wardrobe most securely so that it remains stable over time with daily use and does not develop issues like rattling, leaning, or warping.
Are there any particular tricks for attaching it to the wall or for fastening the individual components? I have assembled furniture before, but with the Hemnes I want to do it as correctly as possible since the wardrobe is somewhat larger and I also plan to store some heavy items inside.
Does anyone have experience on the best assembly process, whether additional reinforcements might be useful, or if there are recommended tools and techniques that aren’t mentioned in the instructions? I am mainly interested in practical, actionable tips that go beyond the standard IKEA manual.
I would appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or common pitfalls to avoid. Thanks in advance!

Hello,
make sure to get edge protectors for the floor if the cabinet is placed on parquet. First, tighten all screws only by hand, then go over them again with a screwdriver. For better stability, always use wall fasteners – this prevents the cabinet from tipping over later.

Hello calogeroja,
First of all, here is a brief assembly guide to help you avoid common issues with the HEMNES wardrobe:
- Check and organize all parts before assembly, especially the dowels and screws. Sometimes small parts are missing or may be warped.
- Important: Do not overtighten the screws for the back panel. Although the back panel provides stability, if it is too tightly fixed, the wardrobe can become warped.
- Wall mounting is not optional with HEMNES but essential. Use suitable wall anchors depending on your wall type (concrete, drywall, etc.) and make sure to install the mounts perfectly level.
- Assemble in the correct order: build the wardrobe completely while ensuring the doors fit properly. Attach the floor protectors (or gliders) only at the end to prevent any binding.
Common mistakes include uneven tightening of screws or skipping wall mounting, which can quickly lead to instability.
If you need any more details, just ask!

Hey calogeroja,
I assembled the HEMNES wardrobe at my home last year and can tell you: the final result really looks great! 😄 A tip from me, which sounds simple but really helps: it’s best to build the wardrobe with two people – this saves you unnecessary stress and makes handling the heavy parts much easier.
One more little hack: if you want to make the shelves inside flexible, buy small felt pads that you can stick under each corner of the shelves. This reduces rubbing and extends their lifespan!
A fun fact: I followed the instructions carefully, but it also helped to take deliberate breaks in between – in the end, it really feels like a puzzle coming together. Good luck with the assembly! 😉

Hello calogeroja,
I want to provide a more detailed response because the HEMNES wardrobe has some technical features that are important to know.
First, regarding the material: HEMNES is mainly made of solid pine wood, which is very sturdy but can expand and contract due to changes in humidity. Therefore, it is important not to over-tighten any connections during assembly. Tightening screws too much can damage the wood or dent the veneer, which may later cause stress and warping.
Regarding wall mounting: The included brackets are generally sufficient, but you must make sure to use the correct anchors for your wall type. For example, with drywall (plasterboard), you should use special hollow wall anchors.
Another point is using the right tools—a cordless screwdriver with torque control is ideal here because it helps prevent screws from being driven in too deeply.
One thing many people overlook is the alignment of the back panel. It should be positioned exactly in the center, as even slight misalignment can cause the entire unit to appear crooked.
Another often missed detail: It can be worth adding some reinforcement at the corners, such as metal brackets on the inside, especially if you plan to store particularly heavy loads.
Finally, my question: Do you want to assemble the wardrobe so it remains portable, or should it be fixed permanently in one place? This will affect the construction to some extent.

Finally, my question: Do you want to assemble the cabinet so that it remains portable, or should it be fixed permanently in one place? That is indeed an important question, because the HEMNES cabinet – like most IKEA furniture – is primarily designed for a fixed location. If you want to move it frequently, I recommend tightening the screws only by hand and, if necessary, readjusting the wall mounting each time you change its position.

Wall mounting for HEMNES is not optional but essential.I completely agree with that; it is key for safety and stability, especially when the cabinet is tall and heavily loaded.
I also always recommend following the instructions carefully step by step and considering the weight of the doors when aligning them. Small hinge adjustments are normal and significantly improve the result.
If you’re still unsure, feel free to ask again.
