Hello everyone,
I am currently exploring expansion options for the IKEA Brimnes range. My question is: Are there compatible add-on parts or extension sets from IKEA itself or third-party providers that can easily be connected to the BRIMNES furniture? I am particularly interested in whether additional shelves, drawers, or special organizers can be used as add-ons that match exactly in design and size. I am looking for practical options to flexibly extend the BRIMNES system without having to invest in completely new furniture pieces.
Has anyone had experience with compatible upgrades or alternatives? If so, how well do the parts fit together, especially regarding assembly and materials?
Thanks in advance!

Maybe you could explain a bit more specifically what you are planning? Do you want to increase storage space, change the appearance, or integrate something special?Regarding storage expansion: My goal is to use the interior of the dressers as efficiently as possible. Modular inserts would be ideal to better organize items such as laundry, accessories, or small objects. The appearance should not differ too much in order to maintain a consistent style.
I can also imagine adding some small attachment elements like extra compartments on Brimnes dressers, which are visually integrated and don’t look bulky.

If you are okay with some DIY work, small modifications to boxes or shelf elements could be the best long-term solution.Could someone maybe give tips on how to best carry out these modifications? I have tools like a jigsaw and sandpaper but I’m not an experienced carpenter.
Regarding modifications: If you want to customize boxes or add-on elements yourself, here are a few tips:
- Take measurements as accurately as possible before you start cutting. It’s better to measure twice than to cut too short.
- For boxes made of wood or MDF, your jigsaw works well; using a fine-toothed blade is important for precise cuts.
- After cutting, be sure to smooth the edges with sandpaper to avoid splinters and maintain a clean surface.
- If you want to match the color, you can use paint or wood stains for touch-ups—sometimes fine sandpaper alone is enough to hide minor imperfections.
- For a better finish, a thin protective layer of clear varnish can help seal the surface.
Alternatively, you could use plastic boxes instead of solid wooden ones, which require less effort for sealing or sanding.
One more recommendation: try practicing first with inexpensive materials before working on high-quality parts.
