Hello everyone,

I am currently considering getting furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series. It is especially important to me that the color options are easy to maintain. I have small children and very little time for extensive cleaning.

So my main question is: Are there any Ikea Hemnes color options that, due to their surface texture or color tone, are particularly suitable for households where quick and easy care is essential?

I have heard about the white option but fear it might show dirt easily. Are there any experiences or recommendations?

Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice!

I believe that when living with small children, you shouldn’t completely avoid light colors like the classic white of the Hemnes series, but it’s important to be realistic. Remember the golden rule: the lighter the surface, the more patience is needed for maintenance.

Maybe a practical game could help so the furniture can handle some wear and tear? Otherwise, darker brown tones are everyday heroes – they forgive a lot and still look really stylish.

A little tip from me: a bit of humor and calmness when dealing with small stains often makes the stress much more manageable.

Easy to maintain in terms of cleaning mainly means that the surface can be wiped with a damp cloth without being damaged. The darker versions have an advantage here, as stains are less visible.

Thank you for the clear explanation. It really helps me to organize my decision.

One more question: Are there any color options in the Ikea Hemnes range that feature particularly scratch-resistant or durable finishes? This would theoretically be important, especially for dressers that are frequently opened and closed.

Good question!

The Hemnes series mainly uses a powder coating or a clear protective wood-based lacquer that offers moisture resistance and some protection against light mechanical wear, but it is not as hard as industrial lacquers used on modern MDF surfaces.

- Scratch resistance is always relative with solid wood furniture—it can be protected but never made completely impervious.
- The dark brown finish is somewhat more resistant to scratches due to the clear lacquer than the white-painted pieces.
- For daily use, additional protection can be achieved with felt pads, gentle handles, and regular re-oiling (if needed).

I would focus more on choosing a color that hides everyday dirt rather than relying on a so-called “super scratch-resistant” finish. Combined with careful use, this will last the longest.

From personal experience: We have Hemnes dressers in white and dark brown. The white version was really frustrating, especially with kids. You can quickly see everything – from drink stains to skin oils.

The dark version (black-brown) is much more forgiving, even though it doesn’t stay completely spotless. Regular wiping is usually enough, and you don’t have to clean constantly.

So, if low maintenance means spending less time on cleaning, I definitely recommend the darker shade.

I can only confirm this: If you have a busy household, choosing the right color is worth its weight in gold. Light colors look nice, but no later than two days after cleaning, you can already see every little stain again, especially on white Hemnes drawers.

Still, if you absolutely want the white version, invest in good cleaning products and cloths – and remind your children that the furniture is not for drawing on 😉.

That confirms my concern. Thanks for the honest feedback!

One last important question to everyone: Do you have any experience with whether Hemnes finishes can be easily sanded or refinished if deeper damage occurs? It would be reassuring to know if the furniture can be given a second chance in case scratches or stains happen.
