Gesar7Hello everyone, I have a somewhat special question and hope there are experts or experienced users here who can help me. I am planning to use my Ikea BESTÅ furniture but want to make it child-friendly since I have young children at home. Specifically, I am looking for any variants, retrofits, or modifying accessories for BESTÅ that make the furniture safer for children—such as rounded edges, special locking systems, soft-close mechanisms for doors, or other child safety adaptations. I am not seeking a general recommendation for a different furniture series, but specifically for BESTÅ systems that can be upgraded to be as child-friendly as possible. Does anyone have experience, tips, or recommendations on which solutions are realistic and practical? Thanks in advance for your feedback!
Hello Gesar7, I completely understand your concern, as safety with furniture is especially important when you have young children. BESTÅ is a modular system known primarily for its flexibility. However, child-friendly retrofitting is not officially offered by Ikea, but here are a few technical suggestions:
- Corner protectors made of soft plastic or foam come in various widths and can be attached with double-sided tape to most edges—especially on the lower corners where children often bump into.
- Child safety locks with a push mechanism are suitable for doors and drawers, preventing them from being opened or at least stopping them from slamming shut quickly.
- Dampers are available in many versions that can be screwed behind the door frame to avoid squeaking and rattling, allowing for gentle closing.
- Pay attention to the installation: BESTÅ furniture must always be secured to the wall to prevent tipping, which is mandatory when children are present.
- If your BESTÅ sideboard has folding doors, magnetic catches are a good retrofit option.
In your place, I would ask Ikea if there are safety accessories specifically designed for your model or alternatively look for custom solutions from specialized child safety product manufacturers.
By the way, if you are handy, you can also round off wooden edges with a small file, but this requires very precise work.

This is the safest way to prevent accidents, particularly with larger BESTÅ units. You can also use magnetic child safety locks that don’t require visible extra parts, keeping a clean appearance. There are also covers available for handles, if your BESTÅ units still have any, to prevent children from getting hurt. If you want a bit more convenience, look into soft-close dampers that prevent the doors from slamming – this can sometimes help avoid little fingers getting pinched.
Hey Gesar7! That sounds like a really great project! 😃 BESTÅ already has a timeless look, and if you enhance it with some smart safety add-ons, it won’t just be childproof but will also stay stylish. Rounded corners can be easily added with self-adhesive silicone corner protectors, which are often almost invisible – perfect for little ones who might bump their heads everywhere. 😉 There are also soft-close dampers for cabinet doors that act like a gentle hand, preventing slamming. And if you enjoy DIY: you can even install small, invisible locking mechanisms that are hard for kids to open. This way, your BESTÅ stays clean-looking but safe at the same time. Good luck with your enhancements!
I would like to add that the material of BESTÅ is relatively sturdy, so adhesive fasteners usually hold well. It is important to pay attention to the quality of the adhesive strips, especially when they are applied to edges that experience a lot of movement. Cheaper versions can come loose over time. For shock absorbers, there are special mountable options available that can be screwed onto the cabinet frame and offer a long service life. Also recommended are mechanical cabinet locks, which can be easily removed with just a few simple steps when the children get older.
