gerhardm5412 Apr 2024 09:37Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a piece of furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series and am now looking for suitable care products that are specifically designed to best protect the surface and material of these pieces. My question is: Are there care products that can particularly protect Ikea Hemnes furniture through special ingredients or application methods, or help extend their lifespan?
I am especially interested in recommendations for appropriate oils, waxes, or varnishes that work well for the partly lacquered and partly solid wood surfaces. I would also appreciate hearing about any experiences with products available at Ikea itself or from specialized retailers.
Thanks for your tips and advice!

Are there any care products that can particularly protect Ikea HEMNES furniture through special ingredients or application techniques, or extend their lifespan?Hello gerhardm54,
I’m happy to address your question in detail, as the HEMNES series does have some specific features to consider when it comes to maintenance. The furniture is mostly made from solid pine wood, which is sometimes lacquered or stained. This means that surface products based on wood oils or waxes with special compatibility for lacquered finishes should be chosen carefully.
- It is important that you avoid using harsh solvents or alcohol, as these can damage the lacquer layer.
- For the solid, unfinished surfaces, colorless or lightly tinted wood oils (e.g., linseed oil or specially formulated furniture oils) are recommended.
- For lacquered surfaces, furniture wax or a mild care spray designed for lacquered wood can be ideal, as it seals the surface and creates a protective layer.
- In general, regular dusting with a soft cloth and avoiding direct sunlight and moisture will help to extend the lifespan.
By the way, I have a question for you: Do you already own a specific type of furniture from the HEMNES series, such as a bed, dresser, or display cabinet? Sometimes the surfaces vary slightly.
I’m happy to provide recommendations for specific products if you’d like.

Both provide protection and care. Important: always test first on an inconspicuous area.

Protecting against discoloration and scratches was important to me. I chose a natural beeswax and applied it regularly – this kept the wood tone vibrant and helped conceal minor scratches.
If you’re unsure: It’s really frustrating to make the wrong choice and end up with stains or unwanted effects. A gentle, repeated test on an edge or the back side is advisable.
I’m curious about your answer—what exact pieces of furniture do you have, and what is the finish like?

From my experience: Using a good furniture oil creates kind of a deluxe protective layer that not only prevents the pine wood from drying out but also protects it from annoying scratches. And honestly, when the finish on HEMNES furniture gets damaged, it doesn’t just look unattractive but ages quite quickly.
So here’s my tip with a wink: better to regularly use care oil or wax—but of course, don’t overdo it. And if you want to be extra safe, gently dust with a microfiber cloth to keep the shine looking nice.
Oh, and if you want to impress, after treatment you can even spill a coffee on it—a little schadenfreude for your guests 😉
Good luck caring for your HEMNES treasures!
