Hello everyone,

I am currently considering replacing the existing handles on my Ikea Platsa cabinets with alternative furniture handles, as I am not entirely satisfied with the ones provided. Therefore, I have a question for the community: Are there any handles that fit particularly well with Ikea’s Platsa system? I am referring not only to appearance but also to proper fit, ease of use, and ease of installation.

I am especially interested in recommendations that not only look unique but are also technically sound and durable. Perhaps someone has practical experience with handles that can be easily swapped without requiring major modifications to the Platsa doors or drawers.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Brief guide if you want to replace it yourself:

1. Get the exact measurements of the screw holes (usually 128 mm (5 inches), sometimes 160 mm (6.3 inches)).
2. Measure the door thickness – for Platsa doors it is usually a bit thicker (19-22 mm (0.75-0.87 inches)).
3. When buying handles, always check the screw length, or get longer screws if necessary.
4. Install the handles using a Phillips or Allen key (depending on the handle).
5. Avoid oversized handles, as they can look awkward on smaller fronts.

Finally: I also tried a countertop as a handle solution once, but it is not recommended due to impractical usability.

I chose the handles from the "Odensvik" series for my Platsa. They fit perfectly, are sturdy, and have a high-quality appearance.

Installation is very easy since the size and the mounting screw perfectly match the original holes.

Interesting, thanks! How did you check and, if necessary, adjust the screw length? I’m worried that Ikea screws might be too short for me if I switch to third-party handles.

What is the best way to find suitable screws? Screw diameter and thread type must be important, right?

Exactly. Most cabinet handles use M4 screws, which is standard for Ikea. You should look for M4 x 25 mm (1 inch) or M4 x 30 mm (1 1/4 inch) screws, depending on the door thickness.

I recommend measuring the cabinet door and checking how much thread length you need. If you buy handles from third-party suppliers, the screw size is usually specified, or they include the screws. If not, you can specifically reorder M4 hex screws at hardware stores.

Regarding the thread type, furniture screws typically use the standard thread "Standard M4."

One last thought from me: If you’re looking for something a bit playful, leather handles are a great option. They add a cozy touch to Platsa without much effort. 🛋️

Leather handles aren’t the most durable, but if you like the look, they definitely make up for it! When paired with appropriate screws, they work very well.
