Hello community,

I have a Malm dresser from Ikea that I really like, but I find the original handles a bit too simple and they look quite cheap to me. Therefore, I’m considering whether there are better replacement handles that are more sturdy, look higher quality, and still fit well.

My specific question is: Are there any recommended alternatives to the original Malm handles that can be easily retrofitted? It is important to me that the dimensions match or that the installation is straightforward without having to drill unnecessarily large holes in the front. I would also like to know which materials or designs are especially suitable to give the furniture a more elegant appearance.

Maybe someone already has experience with other handles or can recommend manufacturers/models that fit perfectly with Malm dressers? I look forward to your tips and advice!

Great, thanks for the detailed explanation!

One more question: I have often read that some Malm dressers also have a hole spacing of 160 mm (6.3 inches). Should I be concerned about this, or is it rather uncommon? In case of doubt, would it be better to order several handles with different measurements and try them out?

The Malm series from Ikea sometimes varies in hole spacing depending on the size of the dresser. Smaller models usually have 128 mm (5 inches), while larger drawers may use 160 mm (6.3 inches).

My advice: Measure the dresser precisely yourself before buying handles. One size larger or smaller usually doesn’t fit well and can ruin the appearance.

If you order online and test several variants, it is worth paying close attention to the return policy.

Maybe another design idea: If you like the retro charm, try leather handles! They have a great feel and give the dresser a completely different vibe. They are usually easy to install as well.

A little joke on the side: Malm + leather handles = "Malmed" style 😉 Jokes aside, they really look stylish and feel comfortable to the touch 🙂

If you value durability, choose metal handles with a screwed-on backplate. Plastic handles tend to break easily, especially on Malm furniture due to the narrow fronts.

A quick note on installation: If you need to drill new holes, use a drilling template to avoid mistakes. Also, drill pilot holes with a small diameter to prevent the wood from splitting.
