ᐅ Are there common assembly mistakes that frequently occur when building the IKEA Hemnes furniture?

FLOSANHello everyone,
I recently assembled an IKEA Hemnes wardrobe myself and found that some of the assembly steps were unexpectedly tricky. My question to the community is: Are there any common assembly mistakes that happen frequently with the IKEA Hemnes? I am particularly interested in typical pitfalls that are easy to overlook or that often cause issues during construction — whether due to incorrectly positioned parts, imprecise drilling, or unclear instructions.
For example, I noticed that the screws for the back panel sometimes don’t fit optimally, and getting the wardrobe doors properly aligned can be challenging. Does anyone know of typical mistakes that regularly occur during assembly? And are there any tips on how to avoid these, so the end result is a stable and visually flawless piece of furniture?
Thanks in advance for your insights and experiences!

I can fully understand the question and would like to share some more detailed insights based on my own experience. One of the main issues with the Hemnes system is actually the precision of the parts. While IKEA generally maintains consistent manufacturing quality, I have noticed several times that the holes for dowels and screws can vary slightly.
This can lead to several potential problems:
- If the dowels don’t fit perfectly, the side panels can easily become misaligned.
- The back panel is usually made of thin chipboard, and its attachment with two rows of small nails or screws can sometimes shift – this causes the back panel to get stuck and the cabinet to become crooked.
- A particularly common mistake is mixing up the right and left side panels, which look very similar at first glance and cause issues with fitting the doors.
A tip: It’s best to carefully check all parts before assembly, frequently compare them with the included instructions, and verify step by step that everything is aligned properly. By following each section of the instructions closely, many sources of errors can be minimized. I would also recommend briefly checking the stability after every major step before continuing.
How exactly did you install the doors? Those are often a challenge if the hinges are not aligned correctly. Did you have any issues with that?

How exactly did you install the doors? They are often a challenge, especially if the hinges are not properly aligned. Did you have any issues with that?Thank you for the detailed response! Yes, that’s exactly what I meant: the door hinges caused me some trouble. I first positioned the metal parts, then tightened the screws just enough by hand, and afterward tried to align the doors. Unfortunately, they don’t close perfectly because they are slightly misaligned. Although the instructions explain how to adjust the hinges, it wasn’t clear to me the first time how much clearance to allow. Is there a proven approach to achieve smooth door closing?
Also, I noticed that the hinge mounting holes in the side panels slightly deviated in my case, which made installation even more difficult.
This is indeed a common issue with the Hemnes. The door hinges are designed to allow for fine adjustments after installation—this is what the small adjustment screws are for.
My advice is to loosely assemble the doors first, then use a spirit level ruler to check the alignment. When the doors are attached but not fully tightened, gradually adjust the screws. Some people adjust them against each other to ensure the doors line up perfectly and don’t stick.
Regarding slight deviations in the drill holes: it often helps to carefully correct the position of the dowels using a small hammer and a wooden block. If the parts differ significantly, it’s worth checking the exact package number and possibly requesting an exchange, as batch variations may occasionally be noticeable.
Once the doors are correctly positioned, be sure to double-check that the hinges are firmly secured—loose screws can quickly cause misaligned doors.

The manual explains how to adjust the hinges, but the first time I tried it, it wasn’t clear to me how much play to allow.I always find it a bit strange that IKEA manuals leave out details like this. The assembly kits seem so perfectly standardized that you’d think nothing could go wrong. Yet, how often do you see crooked Hemnes cabinets in homes? Why do you think that is?
My impression is that many people just go through the assembly process mechanically, without really taking the time to fine-tune the fit, especially for doors. Maybe that’s a professional installation skill IKEA deliberately doesn’t teach, so customers feel the whole process is foolproof.
In the end, it takes a lot of finesse, and sometimes I wish IKEA would provide beginners with more insider tips.
