I plan to repaint some Ikea Besta fronts and want to achieve especially smooth and even surfaces. My question to the community is: Are there any special tips or techniques you would recommend to prevent streaking and to ensure a very smooth, professional finish? I am particularly interested in the best way to prepare the surface, which types of paint are suitable, and how you handle the application to achieve the best uniformity. I look forward to your experiences and advice!

I’m curious: darian52, which type of paint are you planning to use? Water-based or solvent-based? Good question. I’m leaning towards acrylic or water-based acrylic paints because I consider them less harsh and more environmentally friendly. At the same time, the surface still needs to be durable and well-sealed. I have some concerns about adhesion on MDF with a plastic coating. If you recommend solvent-based paint, I’d appreciate your reasons.
Regarding product selection: Water-based acrylic paints are generally a good choice for wood-based materials, but for Besta fronts, you should definitely ensure compatibility with melamine or plastic surfaces. For an especially smooth finish, I recommend two-component (2K) coatings. These are more expensive and require careful application but provide significantly better adhesion and durability.
When applying: It’s important not only to sand and prime but also to avoid touching the surface with bare hands or sweaty gloves. Use clean gloves or no gloves at all to prevent oily spots.
And very important: Emphasize sanding between each coat with ultra-fine sandpaper. This helps achieve smooth surfaces that bond well.

I find your tips really helpful. I’m currently renovating my Besta doors and often worry about doing it evenly. Thank you for also pointing out the importance of preparation and keeping the area clean – that is often underestimated.
Sometimes the fear of making mistakes makes me quite nervous, but having such a clear step-by-step process definitely makes me feel much more confident!

Everyone makes mistakes at some point, but with a spray gun and patience, it feels like a little adventure. And a tip for advanced users: after painting, a thorough polish with very fine abrasive pads adds extra shine and smoothness.

A spray gun can easily apply too much material, causing drips. It is important to work in long, even strokes and keep the gun consistently about 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) away. That’s a very good tip, I would add:
- Practice on a test piece before spraying the actual surface to get a feel for it.
- Don’t spray too slowly, as this can cause runs.
Also, a tip for preparing Besta: If you have very smooth plastic fronts, you can lightly roughen the surface with a scuff pad (e.g., 3M Scotch-Brite medium). This greatly improves the adhesion of the primer.
