timo57Hello everyone,
I have been having the problem for some time that my IKEA Malm furniture is getting increasingly noticeable scratches. In particular, the surfaces show signs of wear quite quickly, even though I have been handling them with great care so far.
Does anyone have tips or specific measures to effectively prevent scratches on Malm dressers or desks? I’m not looking for general maintenance advice, but rather practical tricks, everyday tips, or product recommendations that help protect the surface in the long term.
I would appreciate it if someone could share their experiences or small life hacks. Thanks in advance!

I used to constantly have annoying scratches on my MALM furniture until I applied special felt pads under the decorative items and even under the table lamps – that helped immediately!
Since then, I’ve also been using a transparent protective film that can be cut to size – it’s almost invisible and completely protects against surface scratches.
Simply brilliant, I can only recommend it! :-)

A few targeted tips from me on this topic:
1. Protect surfaces: MALM furniture usually comes with a protective film that is unfortunately very prone to scratching. Therefore, I generally recommend covering especially the top surfaces with a suitable protective film or a thicker transparent table mat.
2. Use glides: As already mentioned, felt pads work very well, especially for drawer knobs, vases, or other decorative items. They should be checked regularly and replaced when worn.
3. Cleaning: Instead of harsh cleaners, it’s better to use a soft microfiber cloth with some lukewarm water. Avoid abrasive cleaners completely, as these make the surface dull and more susceptible to scratches.
4. Handling: If you often slide objects back and forth, try lifting them instead of dragging. This significantly reduces the number of scratches.
In summary: The combination of mechanical protection (glides, films) and proper care is crucial.

Felt pads under all items that are frequently moved. This is important, but I would like to add that they should be high-quality felt pads, not cheap ones that wear out quickly or leave residue.
Additionally, regularly polishing with furniture care products designed specifically for coated surfaces can reduce micro-scratches and make the surface somewhat more resistant.
The room’s humidity level also plays a role. If the air is too dry, some materials may warp or crack further, which can also increase the likelihood of scratches.
Good morning,
I would like to add a piece of advice that is often overlooked. Using coasters or protective pads under all hot or damp objects helps protect surfaces from heat marks or water stains, which over time can appear as small chips or even scratches.
Additionally, when moving furniture, be careful to ensure that no coarse particles like sand or small stones are under the legs – I have encountered several situations where this has caused fine scratches.
