sanmeHello everyone,
I recently bought some IKEA Besta furniture and want to protect it from scratches in the long term. The surfaces aren’t very durable, and I’ve read that they can be quite prone to wear and tear.
Do you have any tips on how to avoid scratches, especially on the doors and top surfaces? Which materials or methods are suitable to protect the furniture from everyday signs of use?
I’m interested in what has proven effective in daily life—whether it’s a special protective film, coatings, or even practical handling advice for the furniture.
Looking forward to your experience and suggestions!

Hey sanme,
great question – although Besta looks very nice, the surfaces are actually more noticeable than you might expect. 😅
I’d recommend checking out furniture stores to see if you can find a transparent protective film. It’s nothing spectacular, but PVC films or special furniture films can really help, especially on surfaces where items are often placed.
Also, attaching small felt pads in high-use areas can work wonders. It makes sliding easier and prevents scratches.
Oh, and if you want to be absolutely safe, always place a soft cloth under objects to keep everything looking good.
Good luck, you’ll manage it! 😉

I covered my Besta top with a matte furniture protective film. It’s hardly visible, and I can finally place my keys or coffee cup down without worry.
I also use small pads under decorations and electronics – it sounds simple but it really prevents many tiny scratches. 😊
My secret tip: If you need a quick solution, fabric coasters or even a mousepad work well as temporary protective surfaces.

My advice: test it first in an inconspicuous area.
In addition to mechanical protection, you should also consider preventing moisture damage by not placing wet glasses on the furniture without coasters.
And if you want to do it properly in the long term, custom-made glass plates for the tops are also an option. These often come in intermediate sizes and provide complete protection against scratches and stains.
