Hello everyone, I recently purchased an IKEA Besta shelving unit and want to install the doors on it. I’m having trouble fitting the doors so they close flush without any unsightly gaps. My main concern is adjusting the hinges and possibly making some modifications to the frame or doors.

Does anyone have experience or tips on how to fit Besta doors perfectly so they sit cleanly without frequent readjustments? What tools are useful, and are there any tricks for dealing with uneven walls or small measurement deviations?

I would appreciate your advice – ideally step-by-step instructions or pointers on what to watch out for beforehand.

Hey Likar, great question! A few months ago, I also added doors to my BESTA shelf and can say from experience: it’s definitely worth aligning the doors with millimeter precision!

My top tip is to use the screws on the hinges for fine adjustments. The IKEA hinges are really cleverly designed and allow small corrections in all directions. Just slightly loosen the screws with a Phillips screwdriver, align the door, and then tighten them again – that makes all the difference!

If you have some time, check whether you can get the shelf and doors perfectly level using a spirit level and small shims. Sometimes it’s not the doors but the cabinet itself that’s slightly out of square.

Hang in there, you can do it! With a bit of patience, it will look really clean in the end!

I agree with labar43 that adjusting the hinges is the key! 😊 Here’s a little tip from me: have some small wooden wedges or even homemade spacers ready – sometimes a slight gap to the wall or adjacent cabinets can prevent scraping.

Also, don’t stress! A bit of fine-tuning is part of the process, and it can be fun if you listen to music or have a coffee nearby ☕️.

And if you notice really large gaps, double-check whether the drawer slides (if any) or shelves have shifted slightly. They can sometimes put pressure on the doors and make perfect closing difficult.

Likar, for a truly precise fitting of the IKEA BESTA doors, I recommend the following approach that has worked very well for me:

- First, you should check the BESTA system’s carcass with a spirit level, measuring millimeter-accurately. Often, the shelves are slightly warped or the wall isn’t perfectly straight, which makes fitting the doors more difficult.
- If the carcass is not perfectly even, you can adjust the base using small wooden shims or adjustable furniture feet.
- The BESTA hinges are adjustable in three dimensions: you can adjust height, depth, and sideways. The key adjustments for a “perfect fit” are:
- Side-to-side adjustment – to align the door in the plane relative to the carcass.
- Depth adjustment – to make the door flush with the carcass.
- Height adjustment – for a perfect gap to the floor and ceiling.

- Always work in small steps and check the door closing after each adjustment.
- For larger unevenness, it’s advisable to have a fine file or sanding block ready to carefully trim edges.

From my experience, it can also be helpful to make slight adjustments after installation, as the wood may settle slightly due to temperature and humidity changes.

What exactly is the problem you’re facing? Are the doors not sitting flush, or is one door difficult to close? Please share your specific issues so I can provide more targeted help.

Thank you very much for the detailed advice, Dilen!

Specifically, the doors do not close completely flush; there are visible gaps of about 2-3 mm (0.08–0.12 inches) in some places. The gap is uneven and irregular, so it doesn’t look optimal.

Additionally, after adjusting, the doors sometimes shift slightly out of alignment again, which I suspect is due to a loose hinge or a slight unevenness in the frame. The doors do close, but they don’t have that clean, flush appearance.

It would be great if I could narrow down the causes and find out which tools I really need to achieve a durable result.

To optimize the fitting of BESTA doors when there are gaps between the door and the cabinet frame, I recommend the following precise approach:

- Check the flatness of the wall and the cabinet frame using a measuring tool (ideally a spirit level or laser level). An uneven wall will inevitably cause uneven gaps.
- Adjust the hinges in the following order:
1. Side adjustment to align the door precisely with the cabinet frame.
2. Depth adjustment to set the door flush with the cabinet front.
3. Height adjustment if the top or bottom gap is uneven.
- Check the hinges themselves for secure fastening. Looseness or incorrect mounting can lead to instability.

Tools:
- Phillips screwdriver
- Spirit level
- Caliper for measuring gaps

If unevenness remains visible, check whether the doors might be warped. A loose hinge or imprecise mounting on the cabinet frame can also be the cause.

Regular inspection and readjustment are advisable with wood-based materials, as the material changes over time and depending on environmental conditions.
