Hello everyone, I just bought several Billy bookcases from IKEA and will be assembling them soon. However, I have heard that the assembly – especially when building multiple units at once – can be quite time-consuming. Are there any tips or tricks to make the assembly of the Billy bookcases faster and more efficient? I’m mainly thinking of a structured approach or special tools that can significantly speed up the process. Maybe you also have experience with how to avoid common mistakes that unnecessarily extend the assembly time. Thanks in advance!
Hello praba, I’m happy to share a brief step-by-step guide that noticeably sped up the assembly of my BILLY shelves:
1. Preparation: Sort all screws, wooden parts, and dowels separately by type—ideally in small bowls or boxes.
2. Workspace: Set up a spacious, flat work surface to minimize unnecessary movement.
3. Tools: Use a good cordless screwdriver with the correct bit that fits the screws exactly—this prevents slipping and saves time.
4. Sequence: Assemble all shelves in parallel steps rather than completing one shelf at a time. For example, first screw together all side panels, then all back panels, and so on.
5. Checking: Regularly check that all screws are straight and tightly fastened to avoid corrections later.
One more tip: especially with BILLY shelves, start assembling the back panel from the center to prevent warping. This saves time in the long run by avoiding rework.
Good luck with your assembly!

Build all shelves in the same steps in parallel, instead of completing one fully before starting the next. That sounds interesting – do you really think this can save that much time?
I have often experienced that working in parallel with loose materials mixes everything up, and in the end, you still have to spend more time sorting. Do you perhaps have any tips on how to effectively avoid this confusion?
Additionally, I’m curious if you have any experience with special attachments for cordless drills that make it easier to work on the inside of the shelves?

...if you also have experience with special attachment tools for cordless drillsYes, a right-angle attachment (also called a reverse driver) often helps when driving screws in hard-to-reach places. This is especially useful with BILLY shelving when you’re fastening lateral screws that are difficult to reach straight on.
One more tip: Using a rubberized mat as a base not only protects surfaces but also prevents small parts from rolling away. This saves searching and delays.
I always think the emphasis on "optimizing" the assembly of BILLY is somewhat overrated. Sure, a cordless drill is great, but it’s much more important not to rush and to work carefully. What’s the point of the fastest assembly if the shelves end up wobbly or you have to fix mistakes afterwards?
That’s a nice idea, but to me it sounds like more work and confusion. I prefer to focus on building one bookshelf at a time – it makes more sense to me and helps avoid mistakes that could cost more time later.
You shouldn’t let time pressure drive you, but rather optimize the process in your own way. Sometimes building more slowly is the better way to speed things up – especially with BILLY, which isn’t the most complicated shelf after all. 🙂
