Hello everyone, I recently purchased an Ikea Besta shelving unit with white surfaces and am now looking for advice on proper care. The surfaces are usually melamine-coated or lacquered, which can be delicate, especially for white furniture that can easily discolor or get scratched. Does anyone have experience or recommendations on how to clean and maintain white surfaces optimally without causing dullness or marks? Are there specific cleaning products, care tips, or things to avoid? Best regards!
Just a quick note from my experience: I have been maintaining the white Besta surfaces for years using a very simple household method. A damp microfiber cloth is usually enough; it works well for grease or dust. For tougher dirt, I use a little neutral soap (pH-neutral) and warm water.
Abrasive cleaners or stronger detergents have only caused minor scratches for me.
The problem is that many users only check the damage after it has already occurred. So it’s better to clean gently and test what you apply to the surface.

The question is also: How do you rate the balance between cleaning effectiveness and material wear?

Hey Guillaumel, I just wanted to say: Treat your maintenance like a chill alarm. Stay relaxed, it’s nothing complicated. Use a damp cloth, no harsh chemicals. It might sound boring, but it’s simply the safest way! Eventually, the shelves will show signs of use—that’s just part of it. Maybe just think of the scratches as stories on the wall, only this time on the furniture. 😉
But seriously: I’d also recommend trying polish or wax for plastic surfaces now and then if you want to keep the shine. Just don’t overdo it, or it can leave a greasy residue.
