Good morning everyone,

Lately, I’ve noticed that the hinges on my Ikea Platsa cabinet have started to squeak, especially when I open or close the doors. It’s quite annoying over time, and I’m wondering if anyone here has tried-and-true tips for fixing this issue permanently and with minimal effort.

I’ve considered lubricating the hinges but am unsure which lubricant is best, as Ikea furniture often consists of thinner metal and plastic components. Does anyone have experience with a particular product or method?

Thanks in advance for your help!

The squeaking issue with Ikea Platsa hinges is actually a well-known problem.

First of all: In my opinion, silicone spray is the best solution because it not only lubricates but also does not attract dirt or cause dust buildup, which oil sometimes does. The hinges should be clean and dry before applying.

If you try conventional oil, I recommend sewing machine oil since it is very fluid and does not gum up. WD-40 is more of a cleaner than a long-lasting lubricant, so it is less ideal as the main treatment.

Be sure to apply carefully to avoid getting lubricant on wood or plastic surfaces to prevent stains.

I’m happy to add a brief step-by-step guide:

- First, fully open the cabinet door.
- Clean the visible part of the hinge with a dry cloth.
- Then, spray a fine silicone spray evenly onto the joint from about 15 cm (6 inches) away.
- Slowly open and close the door several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.
- Wipe off any residue immediately with a cloth before it dries.

Many people make the mistake of applying too much spray. Less is often more. Additionally, hinges treated this way tend to remain quieter for longer than those lubricated with oils, which can attract dirt.

That’s interesting, I thought WD-40 was more of an all-purpose product. Thanks for the clarification!

What do you think about dry lubricants based on graphite? They are supposed to be non-sticky and effective against squeaking. Are they safe to use on Ikea hinges without any concerns?

Graphite is a good dry lubricant that works especially well under heavy load. For Ikea Platsa hinges, I usually consider it overkill. The black residue can also accumulate in crevices and on plastic parts, which can be visually unappealing.

In my experience, silicone spray provides a cleaner result for furniture use. However, if you prefer dry lubrication and don’t mind the black residue, graphite can be an alternative.

Hi,

I believe the most important aspect of lubricating Ikea hinges is regular inspection and proper preparation. Hinges often squeak because small dust particles or cleaning product splashes block the joints. I would recommend:

- Thoroughly cleaning the hinges (e.g., with isopropyl alcohol or denatured alcohol, not water).
- Applying the lubricant only after cleaning.
- Then opening and closing the cabinet a few times to distribute the lubricant evenly.

I have been using silicone spray or sewing machine oil for long-lasting lubrication for years without any issues.
