SemdaAre there any tips for protecting Malm furniture from scratches?
I recently bought Malm furniture for my bedroom and am now a bit unsure about how to prevent scratches or other damage to the surfaces. The tops of the dressers and desks especially look delicate, and I would like to know what practical options are available to keep the furniture in the best possible condition over time.
Are there any special care products, protective films, or everyday habits that have proven effective? I am particularly interested in whether there are plastic-like or transparent protective covers that are discreet yet still provide good protection.
Looking forward to your experiences and advice!

Are there any tips for protecting MALM furniture from scratches?I know that all too well – especially with MALM, the beautiful smooth finish is unfortunately quite vulnerable. I’ve tried using coasters and placemats to minimize damage since scratches often come from simple things like keys or jewelry.
One thing that has helped me is always placing felt pads under decorative items like vases or lamps. It feels a bit inconvenient at first, but it really provides excellent protection.
You also shouldn’t underestimate the importance of regularly wiping the surface with a slightly damp microfiber cloth to remove dust particles that could cause scratches. In the end, it’s a balancing act – you want to use the furniture, not just look at it.
I would also recommend avoiding cutting or writing directly on the surface without some kind of protective layer. The desk, in particular, can be a weak spot for me.
If anyone has experience with protective films or special varnish coatings for MALM, I’d be very interested to hear about it!

I tried to minimize damage by using coasters and placematsThat is already a very good step. MALM furniture is usually made from particleboard with a plastic coating, which is resistant to moisture but relatively sensitive to scratches from mechanical impact.
Thin, transparent protective films designed specifically for furniture surfaces are recommended. These can reliably prevent everyday scratches, especially if you frequently move objects across the surface.
Another tip: avoid harsh cleaning agents or abrasive sponges, as these can damage the finish. Use a mild dish soap diluted in water and a soft cloth.
Additionally, I recommend applying furniture wax or oil, which improves UV protection and creates a light protective layer. This treatment should be repeated every few months depending on usage.
If you use the desk often, it is also worth investing in a desk pad made of plastic or leather, which protects the surface and provides a comfortable writing area.

Are there any tips for protecting MALM furniture from scratches? Here’s something simple and practical: I use small felt pads on the feet of decorative items, and ever since I started doing that, my nerves have been much calmer. 🙂

placing a felt pad under decorative items like vases or lamps Smart tip, exactly like that. For the desk, a clear desk protector sheet that I cut to size works well. The sheet is barely visible but protects against scratches from writing or if something slides off.
One more bonus: if a small scratch does appear, you can hide it with a wax repair stick matching the furniture color – available online in various shades and looks great.
In summary: with small investments, protection feels much less like a burden, and your furniture stays looking nice longer – have fun trying it out! :-)
