Hello everyone,

I hope there are some experienced users here who can help me. I recently purchased an IKEA Platsa system and plan to set it up in our living room. However, we also have two rather curious cats, who are known for climbing on furniture, scratching corners, or knocking items off shelves.

My question is: Are there any tips or proven methods to effectively protect a Platsa system from scratches, edge wear, or other damage caused by pets?

I am especially interested in practical protective measures that keep the furniture in good condition over the long term without altering the design too much. Perhaps you have experience with these challenges and can recommend ways to protect the sensitive MDF panels or the surface from cat claws and possible moisture.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

Hey WULFILALE,

great that you started this topic here, because I think IKEA PLATSA looks really stylish, but cats and furniture can sometimes be a tricky combination 😅.

I have two cats and a similar setup – here are a few tips from me:
- The obvious first step: scratch protection film! There are transparent films that you can stick on the critical areas without significantly affecting the design.
- Place cat toys near the PLATSA – this often distracts the furballs really well.
- If your cats like to climb, you can attach larger corner protectors on the sides or edges that are a bit more durable.
- A scent-deterring spray can also help sometimes, ideally one without chemicals to avoid harming the animals.

A bit of effort, but better than dealing with scratches later on. Good luck and feel free to share how it goes!

To add my input:

For protecting the IKEA PLATSA system from cats, the following practical measures have proven effective:
- Use specially designed scratch-resistant films or protective coatings for furniture surfaces made of MDF.
- Avoid the use of varnishes or oils that might attract cats.
- Place sturdy scratching posts and mats nearby to redirect the animals’ attention.
- Installing rounded edges or plastic edge protectors on exposed areas reduces mechanical wear.

These measures can be combined and help keep the furniture durable. The PLATSA systems are not inherently designed to withstand heavy claw damage, so preventative steps are important.

This is the simplest method. Especially if it is a transparent film, it remains invisible. It effectively prevents scratches.

Hello WULFILALE,

I’m very familiar with this issue – it’s always a delicate balance when you have pets and furniture. I often feel a bit sorry having to protect beloved furniture with covers or protective films, but of course, you have to be pragmatic.

I have set up a dedicated corner in my living room with a sturdy scratching post and a cozy resting place.

This helped a lot to shift their focus away from the furniture. Sometimes it also helps to reward your cats with a small ritual or treats as soon as they use the approved scratching areas. This way they quickly get encouraged, and you save your nerves.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you find a suitable solution!

I can only emphasize once again: It’s worth sticking with it! 😊

If you equip the PLATSA with a scratch protector and gently redirect your cats’ scratching behavior, you will really enjoy it for a long time.

That’s exactly what I did, and it worked really well! Also, regularly trimming your pets’ claws reduces the likelihood that they will use furniture as scratching objects.

I wish you much success and fun with your PLATSA system and your pets!
