Hello everyone,
I’m interested in how to personalize Ikea Hemnes furniture to make it more unique than the standard models. My question is: Are there any proven tips or techniques to visually and functionally modify Hemnes wardrobes, dressers, or other pieces from the series without compromising their stability? I’m thinking of methods like painting, changing handles, adding extra shelves, or making interior modifications.
I’m particularly curious about what has worked well, which materials are suitable, whether there are difficulties when disassembling, and if such changes might affect the warranty or assembly instructions.
I would really appreciate detailed experiences or practical advice that go beyond simple adjustments. Thanks!

Hello lana6,
First of all, your question is very well formulated and shows that you are not only superficially interested in customizing your Hemnes furniture but also aware of the technical aspects and limitations.
Regarding your concern: Hemnes furniture is traditionally made from pine wood and is relatively sturdy; however, the surface is often only lightly treated, so further treatment such as staining or painting is quite feasible, but it should be done very carefully.
- If you want to paint, I recommend disassembling the furniture as much as possible and lightly sanding the surface with fine sandpaper (grit 180 to 220) to help the paint adhere better.
- A high-quality wood primer is important before painting to prevent the paint from flaking.
- Water-based acrylic or chalk paint works best, as it is low in odor and does not overly seal the wood.
Regarding the handles, Hemnes typically uses standardized drill holes (64 mm (2 1/2 inches) hole spacing), so you can relatively easily replace them with other hardware. I recommend brass or stainless steel handles, as they are durable.
Inside, you can customize the space by adding extra shelves or installing small storage systems. Be careful not to exceed the load capacity of the side panels, as Hemnes furniture usually has thinner back panels.
Warranty: After disassembling and modifying the furniture yourself, be cautious about the Ikea warranty, since visible changes may void it. However, this usually matters less if you carry out the work neatly and professionally.
Just out of interest: Have you considered whether you want to create noticeable visual effects like bleaching or decoupage techniques on the surface? These techniques are possible but require more effort.
What exactly do you want to achieve? More color options? Better interior organization? Then I can give you more specific advice.
Best regards,
Filippo

In short:
- Replacing handles is the easiest way to personalize Hemnes furniture.
- Painting or staining requires careful sanding.
- The interior can be easily expanded with additional shelves.
- The warranty is void if modifications are made.
That’s basically all you need to know to get started right away.

I once tried to put more into a Hemnes cabinet than recommended, and unfortunately, the back panel warped slightly. That was quite frustrating and made me a bit uncertain.
You don’t want the effort of personalizing the furniture to cause damage that ultimately reduces your enjoyment of it.
For me, replacing the handles and installing LED light strips inside was a great solution that was easy to do and really enhanced the piece.
I’m curious to hear what other ideas you all have.
And Lana6: Do you already have a clear favorite direction for your personalization?
Hello everyone,
I’d like to explore this topic a bit further, as personalized Hemnes furniture has been on my mind for some time.
The assembly of Hemnes is pleasant thanks to the precise fit, but you need to be careful when disassembling, especially at the corners, which are secured with wooden dowels and screws. If you plan to completely take the furniture apart, for example to apply a new finish, I recommend the following:
- Mark all parts with tape and a pencil before disassembling, so you can easily reassemble everything correctly later.
- Pay attention to the correct order of the screws; some are shorter or longer.
- For painting or finishing, apply several thin layers to avoid drips.
Regarding handles: It’s worthwhile to upgrade the standard IKEA mounting holes with truly high-quality handles, which instantly give the piece a “custom furniture” feel. Whether vintage or modern, changing the handles is one of the best improvements.
Interior: I recommend using small wooden boxes or baskets inside, and if needed, adding custom shelves with matching drill holes (watch for stability!). Installing a cable management system is also not difficult, especially if you retrofit interior lighting like LED strips.
On the topic of warranty: I can confirm that once visible modifications are made, IKEA’s warranty no longer applies. However, Hemnes furniture is so well-made that changes usually do not negatively affect functionality.
One interesting question remains: Do you want to keep your furniture mostly Scandinavian in style with only subtle changes, or are you aiming for a completely new look?
Best regards,
Palenar

Are there any proven tips or techniques to visually and functionally modify Hemnes cabinets, dressers, or other furniture pieces from the series without compromising their stability?I have spent a lot of time personalizing Hemnes furniture and can confirm that combining "functional modifications" with "improving the appearance" is the most enjoyable part.
What worked very well for me:
- Replacing the back panel with thinner plywood sheets to attach items like magnetic strips or hooks. This does require some experience in handling.
- Swapping the original shelves for custom-made ones, for example from glass or thin wood, which makes the interior look brighter.
- Using furniture wax or hard oil instead of paint to preserve the wood character while still protecting the surface.
A small warning: when drilling holes for additional strips, be sure to pay close attention to the wood depth; otherwise, screws might go into unintended spots, affecting stability.
For a unique look, you can choose handles made from interesting materials like leather or ceramic, which really stand out from the usual options.
Are you reasonably skilled with tools, or are you looking for simpler methods?

DUVIN
