Hello everyone, I recently bought a Besta shelving unit from Ikea and noticed that the door hinges have become a bit stiff over time and make quiet creaking noises. Since I know that furniture with metal hinges, like those from Ikea, can often run much smoother with proper maintenance, I wanted to ask: Are there any tips or proven methods for effectively maintaining the hinges on Ikea BESTA furniture to ensure their long-term function? What are the best care products to use, and how often should this maintenance ideally be performed to prevent rust or wear? Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

Simply spray the hinges with a bit of WD-40 or another lubricant. Turn the hinge to let the oil penetrate, then open and close the door several times. I do this every few months to keep everything running smoothly.

I’d like to add a bit more detail: Ikea BESTA hinges are usually nickel-plated or zinc-coated metal parts with plastic bushings. To maximize their lifespan, I recommend regular cleaning before lubricating. That means first using a dry or slightly damp cloth to remove dust and any accumulated dirt from the visible parts of the hinges.

After that, a thin silicone oil can be very helpful because it doesn’t stick and doesn’t attract dirt particles. Spray it sparingly from the door’s opening side directly onto the hinge, then gently move the door back and forth several times.

Important points:
- Avoid using greasy oils like thick lubricating greases, as these can hold onto dirt.
- Make sure not to apply too much oil or overspray onto the wood or surface.
- Depending on usage, maintenance every six months is usually sufficient; more frequent lubrication may be needed if noise occurs.

Do you have specific issues, such as rattling hinges or doors that don’t stay properly aligned? In that case, the screws can also be carefully tightened, as they tend to loosen over time.

I am quite familiar with this issue—it can be really frustrating when the doors squeak or become stiff. What has always helped me is to take the time to maintain the hinges regularly and remember to do so, especially when the furniture is used frequently. There’s nothing more annoying in everyday life than creaky hinges.

I also think it’s important not to hesitate to take a close look and check whether the screws are still tight, the mechanism is properly aligned, and if the frame might be slightly warped. Often, this small inspection can prevent much bigger problems down the line.

If lubricating the hinges alone isn’t enough, I would also consider whether the hinges might need to be replaced—especially in older furniture that is heavily used. But your initiative to ask early on is already the best step. Keep it up!
