Hello everyone, I am planning to furnish the children’s room with IKEA Hemnes furniture and am looking for tips and advice on how to make this series child-friendly. My main focus is on how to combine functionality, safety, and design in a sensible way without the room feeling cluttered or too childish, so that the furniture can grow with the child over time. The Hemnes range offers many great individual pieces, but how have you made the most practical and appealing use of them in children’s rooms? Are there any specific modifications, storage solutions, or design ideas you would recommend? Safety is especially important to me (e.g., edges, stability) as well as adapting the furniture to the changing needs of children. I look forward to hearing about your experiences!

As an addition: Especially with Hemnes dressers, it is advisable to use flexible drawer inserts for organization, so that toys, clothes, or school supplies can be kept separate. Combining open shelves with baskets is also very effective for making the storage space look tidy.

Safety is a top priority here because although the Hemnes series is solid and sturdy, it is not automatically childproof – especially as children grow, it is important to check which furniture pieces can be adjusted to be higher or lower.

Another point is lighting: A nice warm white LED strip or night light near the bed creates a pleasant atmosphere and increases safety at night.

I completely agree. Additionally, I recommend paying attention to the load capacity of the shelves. In my experience, using the baskets specifically designed for Hemnes shelves from IKEA works very well – they fit perfectly and are sturdy enough for everyday use in a child’s room.

For safety: securing furniture to the wall is not optional but essential when you have small children. I didn’t overlook this in our home and strongly advise against ignoring it – children are quicker than you think.

If anyone would like ideas for flexible use of Hemnes desks for homework or crafts, I’m happy to share more.
