GijsduHello everyone, I am planning to furnish the children’s room with IKEA Hemnes furniture and am looking for tips and advice on how to make this series child-friendly. My main focus is on how to combine functionality, safety, and design in a sensible way without the room feeling cluttered or too childish, so that the furniture can grow with the child over time. The Hemnes range offers many great individual pieces, but how have you made the most practical and appealing use of them in children’s rooms? Are there any specific modifications, storage solutions, or design ideas you would recommend? Safety is especially important to me (e.g., edges, stability) as well as adapting the furniture to the changing needs of children. I look forward to hearing about your experiences!

For example, the dressers with drawers offer a lot of flexible storage space that can be used for clothing or toys. It is important to round off all edges or use edge protectors, as the furniture tends to have sharp edges. Additionally, I recommend securing the furniture to the wall to prevent tipping accidents – IKEA provides appropriate mounting hardware for this.
Regarding design, I find it practical to choose neutral colors like white or gray and complement them with colorful, interchangeable decorative elements – this way, the room can grow with the child’s development while still looking fresh.

Personally, I find that a Hemnes dresser with interchangeable inserts—like fabric baskets or small boxes—not only helps keep things organized but also adds flexibility. 😄 And for those who like, using child-friendly wall stickers or magnetic elements from the Hemnes shelf can create an engaging, personalized experience. This way, the room doesn’t get boring but always feels fresh.
The Hemnes beds also often provide practical storage underneath, which is a real advantage, especially in smaller rooms.

Nathanaelk21 Jul 2024 11:49To use the Hemnes furniture series optimally for a child's room, several aspects should be considered and addressed systematically:
- Safety: All Hemnes furniture is generally built solidly; however, sharp edges, especially on desks and dressers, should be softened. Edge protectors made of silicone or foam are very helpful here.
- Installation: Hemnes pieces must be properly secured to the wall, particularly taller cabinets and shelves. Use the included wall fasteners and ensure the mounting surface is suitable (concrete, drywall with anchors, etc.).
- Adaptability: Hemnes furniture can be well combined with other IKEA systems, for example by using storage boxes inside dresser drawers. A combination of a dresser and wall shelf is also practical to maximize storage without crowding the room.
- Design: For colors, I recommend choosing white or gray furniture first and then adding child-friendly fabrics or decorative elements. This way, the furniture remains durable and adapts as the child grows.
Are there specific Hemnes items you are considering? What are the room dimensions and the child’s age group? This often makes a big difference in the recommendations.

Are there any specific pieces from the Hemnes series you are considering? What are the room dimensions and the child’s age group?Thank you for the detailed advice! The room is about 12 m² (130 sq ft), rather rectangular. I was thinking of a 90 x 200 cm (35 x 79 inch) Hemnes bed, a matching dresser with 3-4 drawers, and a small shelf for books and toys. The child is currently three years old but will definitely need to use the room independently later on. Therefore, the flexibility of the furniture is important. If you have any special recommendations for drawer organization or versatile uses, that would be really helpful.

- A chest of drawers with soft-close drawers is safer and quieter
- Mount wall shelves at child height to improve accessibility
- Cover edges with soft protective padding
- Add rentable ottomans or poufs as flexible seating options
