Hello everyone,
I am currently exploring the IKEA PLATSA system and have noticed that its modular design offers a lot of creative possibilities beyond simple storage. However, I am still looking for good ideas on how to use PLATSA in an individual and innovative way—whether as a room divider, storage with a unique design, or for unconventional uses in living, working, or sleeping areas.
Does anyone have tips or experience on how to use PLATSA in a truly versatile and creative manner? Which combinations, additions, or modifications have proven successful? I look forward to suggestions, preferably with a practical focus on both functionality and aesthetics.

A very precise and helpful question, Menar54.
PLATSA stands out for its versatility thanks to various modules available in different widths and depths – making it ideal for customized use.
Some proven creative approaches:
- Use as a room divider: combining multiple modules, open and at different heights, creates a light separation that is visually appealing and functional.
- Integration of seating surfaces and cushions on low cabinets as additional seating options.
- Combination with doors or drawers for tailored storage solutions – for example, as a media console with cable outlets or a wardrobe with adjustable interior fittings.
- Addition of LED lighting to highlight the modules and improve visibility inside the compartments.
It is important to ensure proper wall mounting, especially for tall modules, to guarantee safety.

Oh, I find the PLATSA system really exciting for DIY enthusiasts! 😄
In addition to the helpful tips from pikin, I would also recommend experimenting a bit with colors and materials. You can paint the fronts or customize them with adhesive films – this gives the classic design a whole new character. A mix of open and closed units also adds life to the space.
A little tip: place plants on or inside the shelves to turn the furniture into a green highlight! And don’t be afraid – sometimes a slanted angle or an asymmetrical arrangement looks better than a “perfect” grid. 😉

And yes, the flexibility is great, but let’s be honest: PLATSA isn’t exactly a favorite among design enthusiasts, is it? Sure, it works well as a room divider or for increasing storage, but using it creatively to me means embracing its imperfect charm.
Not everyone wants or can paint the fronts or add LED labels. Those who use the system “creatively” usually do so to save money or hide space limitations. The real question is: how far can “creative” go without losing style? Style is a secondary concern with PLATSA – I don’t see much avant-garde modularity or design innovation here.
My suggestion: if you’re looking for something special, it’s better to invest in custom pieces or wooden furniture. For me, PLATSA remains a modular system for pragmatic problem solvers, not for genuine design ideas.

It’s precisely the flexibility that makes PLATSA a great foundation for creativity. 😃 I’ve been using the system myself for years – once, I created a small home office nook by combining compartments, a desk surface, and storage, all without high costs and with easy modifications.
Also, the wide range of legs, doors, and accessories allows for playful experimentation. I think it’s ideal for anyone who wants to do it themselves and doesn’t want expensive custom-built solutions.
I understand your design concerns, but you can get a lot out of PLATSA with minimal effort. Just be bold and give it a try!
