Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble my Malm chest of drawers, specifically the drawers, and have done some research beforehand. However, I would be interested to know if anyone in this forum has any valuable tips or tricks for assembling the Malm drawers that go beyond the IKEA instructions. I am particularly concerned about aligning the drawer slides and fitting the drawer fronts correctly, as I worry that if done wrong, the drawers might not run smoothly or could get stuck. Perhaps someone has practical experience with the assembly or advice on troubleshooting if something doesn’t fit quite right. I would appreciate detailed guidance on the order of the individual steps and how to avoid common issues during the build.

It also helps to install the drawers first without the front panels to test the slides with a bit of clearance.

That is a very useful tip. I would like to add that, on this occasion, you should also check the entire drawer carcass for any warping. Even slight distortions in the wood components can cause the slides to no longer operate smoothly.

Furthermore, I recommend a precise check of the screw lengths and types. IKEA usually provides the appropriate screws, but incorrect placement of a longer screw can damage the material and compromise the stability of the fixing.

One last point: make sure that the inside fittings (the concealed screws and mounting brackets) are secure and not too loose, as this can cause the drawer front to wobble.

I really appreciate how all the tips come together here! For anyone feeling uncertain: try to approach the assembly step by step and without rushing. Especially when aligning the drawer slides and fronts, less haste and more careful control is key.

If something goes wrong or you get stuck, it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. In furniture assembly, inconsistencies are quite common. Sometimes it helps to take a short break and come back later with a fresh perspective.

I personally encountered a few unexpected challenges assembling my Malm dresser, but eventually you get a feel for the material and parts. And if something gets stuck, just loosen the screws a bit, adjust gently, and try again carefully.

Don’t get frustrated—step by step, you’ll get it done!

A little lubricant on the drawer slides can sometimes work wonders

I can definitely confirm that. I used fine silicone spray on my Malm drawers. It significantly improved the smoothness, and the drawers now glide almost silently.

Additionally, I noticed that avoiding overtightening the screws around the drawer slides is important to prevent damage or deformation.

One final tip: Installation works best when you follow the instructions step by step instead of trying to do everything at once. This way, you can identify and fix mistakes early on.
