Good morning everyone, I am planning to assemble the IKEA Brimnes furniture system together with my two children. Since I know this can sometimes be chaotic and time-consuming, I’m looking for specific tips or experiences on how to make this process as smooth, safe, and especially child-friendly as possible. Are there strategies for assigning age-appropriate tasks specifically for children? How can frustration be avoided on both sides, especially when dealing with the more complex parts and screws? I would really appreciate detailed advice that makes assembly easier while turning it into a nice family project.

Hello Tatila, that’s a great question, and I’m happy to share a structured approach to organizing the assembly of the BRIMNES with children.

First of all: preparation is key.
- Lay out all the parts on the floor and check against the instructions to make sure everything is complete. Children are great helpers when it comes to unpacking and sorting parts by type and size.
- Explain the individual tools and parts beforehand so the little ones know what they are holding.

Regarding the assembly itself:
- Assign smaller, safe tasks to the children, such as laying out screws, counting nuts, or sorting parts by construction stages. This way they feel involved without compromising safety.
- For the more complex steps, it’s best to first demonstrate them briefly so they can see how everything fits together.
- Plan breaks! Especially with younger children, concentration can drop quickly.

Important: be patient and encourage them without blame when mistakes happen.

In summary, a clear, structured plan with age-appropriate tasks and open communication works best. Good luck with the assembly!

In my opinion, this is very important, especially since some screws or other parts can be small and dangerous for children. I would also recommend securing the area well to prevent anything from getting lost and to avoid accidentally knocking over nearby objects.

For younger children, tasks like holding larger components or calling out for needed parts can be assigned.

And very important: Don’t rush! It’s best to plan the assembly in small, relaxed segments and celebrate the small achievements together.

Adapt tasks according to age. Younger children may enjoy sorting screws, while older ones can assist with simple assembly. Store tools safely. Take breaks.

I would like to add that when assembling the BRIMNES children’s wardrobe, it is essential to follow IKEA’s safety instructions carefully.

- Always tighten screws fully, paying attention to the torque applied to avoid damaging the materials.
- Children should never be left alone with small parts or tools, especially without supervision.
- A child-appropriate introduction to the tools and proper behavior during assembly is crucial.

A systematic approach and a clearly defined work process reduce error rates and increase efficiency. This helps maintain a positive atmosphere during the family project.

This is really a crucial point. I would like to add some examples:

- Children from about 3 to 5 years old can handle small screws or wall plugs; this is a manageable but important task.
- From around 7 to 9 years old, they can be given more responsibility, for example, holding panels during screwing or placing nails without using a hammer.

Under no circumstances should power tools like cordless drills be used without constant supervision.

What I personally always recommend: having a printed version of the building plan is often easier to understand for everyone. The schematic drawings on the Ikea instruction sheet, however, can be misinterpreted over time if you are not careful.
