Hello everyone, I have a Malm dresser from Ikea and want to make sure I take proper care of it to keep it in good condition. Are there any specific care tips or procedures to follow for Malm dressers? I am particularly interested in the surfaces, coatings, the material itself, and how to handle minor damages like scratches or moisture. It would be great if you have any experiences or recommendations specifically for Malm dressers, as I have heard that some household products or cleaning methods can actually cause damage. Thanks in advance!

Hi Niflo48, your question is very well asked, as Malm dressers are mainly made from particleboard with a plastic coating and can therefore be somewhat more delicate than solid wood.

As a general rule, I recommend not using overly wet cloths – instead, use a slightly damp cloth followed by drying with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid aggressive cleaning sprays, alcohol, or solvents, as these can damage the surface.

That’s correct, especially abrasive cleaners or ammonia-based products can dull or damage the surface. For removing minor scratches, I suggest using special repair markers or kits for furniture, which you can find at hardware stores.

If moisture does get in, it’s best to wipe it dry immediately, as the material can swell otherwise. To protect it, you can also occasionally use furniture polish designed for plastic surfaces to keep the appearance fresh.

For factual clarification: The Malm chest of drawers is made of particleboard with a melamine resin coating. This coating is durable but not resistant to all substances.

– Cleaning: Use only a mild soap solution; avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
– Surface: Avoid exposure to UV radiation, as prolonged sunlight can cause discoloration.
– Damage: For scratches, I recommend using plastic repair kits instead of paint, since paint may result in chipping.

Furthermore, the chest of drawers should not be exposed to moisture for extended periods. It is advisable to place it on feet or risers that protect against cold floors and dampness.

I would like to provide a clear summary of some care tips for Malm dressers, based on my experience with this series:

1. Cleaning

- Use a soft, damp microfiber cloth, ideally with a small amount of mild detergent.
- Immediately follow up by wiping with a dry cloth.

2. Clothing & Scratches

- Avoid placing sharp-edged objects directly on the surface.
- For minor scratches, repair waxes or color-matching touch-up pens are recommended.

3. Moisture

- Do not place wet items directly on the surface without a protective layer, as this can cause the material to swell.

4. UV Protection

- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as the surface may discolor.

5. Assembly and Stability

- Ensure the dresser is placed on a level surface to prevent uneven stress.

Summary: Gentle care, avoiding abrasive materials, and promptly removing moisture are key points for maintaining Malm dressers.

Hey, thanks for the great tips so far! I’d like to add that it actually helps to occasionally dust not only the surfaces but also the drawer slides with a dry cloth.

And if you’re in a hurry: a slightly damp cloth is perfectly fine. No need for harsh chemicals, otherwise you’ll end up frustrated.

Absolutely, I’ve experienced that too. The surface quickly loses its shine otherwise.

So, it’s better to take care gently and with some care, then the Malm will stay looking good for a long time 😊

I would like to provide a more detailed explanation of some technical aspects of the Malm dresser and its care to avoid misunderstandings. The Malm series is basically made of particleboard panels coated with melamine resin. This provides a certain degree of scratch resistance, but the material is somewhat sensitive to moisture.

When cleaning with moisture, you should never use too much water to prevent the particleboard from swelling. After cleaning, the surface should always be completely dry before being loaded or having objects placed on it.

Scratches mainly occur from hard or sharp-edged objects, so it is advisable to use felt pads or a soft mat for protection over time. For minor repairs, special repair kits with color-matched wax sticks or pastes are suitable and can be carefully applied to the damaged area.

Another special consideration is sensitivity to heat and UV light: prolonged direct sunlight can cause discoloration. Hot pots or hairdryers should never be placed directly on the surface.

I wonder: Has anyone had experience using furniture polish or oils on this type of surface? In theory, these products are mostly designed for solid wood and could damage or smear the plastic coating.
