Hello everyone,

I wanted to start a discussion: Are there any issues that can arise when storing items in Ikea Hemnes furniture?

I’ve noticed that when organizing my belongings in the HEMNES dressers, I occasionally encounter difficulties, especially regarding space layout and the maximum load capacity of the drawers. Particularly with more complex items or when using the drawers to store heavy objects, I wonder if other users have had similar experiences.

I am especially interested in the following points:
- Are there common mistakes to avoid when storing items?
- Are the drawers stable enough for regular use?
- What limitations exist concerning the layout or use of the compartments?

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

To return to the question of whether wooden drawer slides can be replaced with more durable alternatives: theoretically yes, but these are custom-made parts that must be precisely matched to the piece of furniture.

The dimensions of Hemnes dressers are standardized, but the drilling holes and mechanisms often differ from those of other manufacturers. Replacing them with high-quality metal slides therefore requires technical experience as well as precise measuring and fabrication if necessary.

Steps to consider:
- Measure the existing slides accurately
- Purchase compatible roller or ball-bearing drawer slides with the same load capacity
- Adjust drilling holes if needed and use new mounting hardware

It is also important to consider the load-bearing capacity of the cabinet itself to ensure the modification is effective. Otherwise, there is a significant risk that the furniture will lose stability or the mechanism will not function properly. For typical users, it is usually better to store items carefully so the natural load limit is not exceeded.

I can understand that such limitations can be frustrating, especially when you need a lot of storage space and rely on your furniture.

I myself was initially concerned about the durability of my HEMNES chest of drawers, mainly because it gets quite frequent use. It helps me to keep in mind that furniture does have its limits – and that is completely normal.

Maybe it’s worth considering purchased furniture as part of a solution made up of several elements, instead of trying to fit everything into one chest of drawers. This reduces some stress and has made organizing easier for me.

Keep your spirits up; it’s normal that not everything fits perfectly – you’re not alone!

If the issue is with the wooden drawers, try regularly applying wax or special wood care oils to the runners to improve their movement.

Also, avoid overfilling the drawers and store heavy items as low as possible.

I believe the storage issues with HEMNES are often self-inflicted. Anyone expecting a pine wood dresser to withstand the same load as a professional-grade workshop shelf is almost bound to be disappointed.

Additionally, it is frequently overlooked that Ikea furniture involves compromises – functional and affordable, but not indestructible.

To sound a bit blunt: maybe it helps some to adjust their expectations slightly. If you want ultra-robust storage, you’ll need to look elsewhere.
