robertoflo26 Mar 2023 16:37Hello everyone,
I’m planning to better organize my small apartment and have been considering the Ikea Brimnes range, mainly because of the space-saving potential offered by its partly shallow but versatile storage solutions.
My question to everyone here in the forum: Are there any specific experiences with using Ikea Brimnes in small apartments, particularly regarding storage capacity, everyday practicality, and quality?
I’m especially interested in whether the furniture, despite its compact dimensions, has proven to be durable and practical, and if it really helps to use smaller spaces more efficiently without making the rooms feel cluttered.
Perhaps someone also has tips on combining the different Brimnes pieces or knows of any pitfalls to watch out for?
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hello Robertoflo,
About two years ago, I furnished my small 32m² (344 sq ft) apartment using Ikea’s Brimnes range and would like to share my experience.
First of all, it’s important to know that Brimnes is designed with a simple style and shallow depth, making it ideal for small spaces. I mainly used the wardrobe and the bed with integrated storage.
- The wardrobe offers surprisingly ample space for its size, has adjustable shelves, and is fairly sturdy. However, careful assembly is necessary to ensure stability.
- The bed with storage box is especially useful when there is limited closet space. The mechanism operates smoothly and provides plenty of storage for seasonal clothing or bedding.
- One minor drawback might be the particleboard construction, which doesn’t compare to solid wood but is entirely acceptable for the price.
Yes, I use the furniture daily and it has held up well so far. However, I recommend protecting it with suitable furniture pads if it will be subjected to heavier wear.
Conclusion: If you don’t expect above-average durability, Brimnes is a good and practical choice for small apartments.
If you plan combinations, make sure the cabinets aren’t too deep to keep the room feeling more spacious.

Mich interessiert vor allem, ob sich die Möbel trotz ihrer eher kompakten Abmessungen als langlebig und praktisch erwiesen haben

In addition to Sarlo’s clear overview, I would like to add the following:
1. Brimnes is highly compatible with other Ikea systems due to its standardized dimensions. This allows you to flexibly add shelves or drawer units.
2. The furniture is made of medium-density fiberboard with a melamine coating, providing moderate durability. This is sufficient for smaller apartments where the furniture is subject to less heavy use.
3. Thanks to the shallow construction, the cabinets and other units save space, but good organization is necessary when storing items, as the storage space tends to be wider rather than deep.
A common weak point is the edge coating, which can crack when exposed to moisture or very frequent use.
I agree with this. The adjustability of the shelves allows for flexibility and is especially important in small apartments. It is also important to regularly check the hinges and sliding rails and lubricate them lightly if necessary to ensure long-term functionality.
Overall, I consider Brimnes a practical system that works well for small spaces if used under appropriate conditions.

For the price, the quality is acceptable, but nothing more. The furniture is sturdy enough for daily use, but the bed, in particular, shows slight wear on the hinges after about a year.
The storage space is well utilized, but in very small rooms, careful planning is necessary to avoid a cramped feeling.
I recommend, if possible, checking the furniture in person to see if the materials meet your own standards.
