Hello everyone, I am currently considering modifying my IKEA Malm desk because the original offers too little storage and flexibility for my needs. Has anyone here had experience with Malm desk modifications? I am particularly interested in which materials and tools have proven effective, how simple or complex the modification is for non-professionals, and whether any specific technical challenges have come up (e.g., stability, surface treatment). Any advice on extensions like cable management or ergonomic adjustments would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your tips and feedback!
I think Malm modifications are often overestimated. The furniture is not designed to be heavily altered, which quickly leads to stability issues. If you want a sturdy piece of furniture, it’s better to buy a model that is suitable from the start. Modifications are more of a pastime and add little real value, unless you specifically want to showcase your DIY skills.

I understand your desire for custom modifications, Thaddeusmo, and I can also see SIAURORA’s concerns. However, I have often seen good results when small improvements like additional shelving levels or cable pass-throughs are planned while largely preserving the original structure. It is important to keep an eye on the load-bearing points and not remove too much material. If you have experience using a cordless screwdriver, drill, and sanding tools, this approach can work well. For the surface, I recommend sealing it with clear varnish to protect the veneer.

I have one more question: Does anyone have experience installing drawer slides under the MALM panel? I believe this could significantly improve storage space, but I am not sure how difficult the installation is or whether it would affect the stability of the table. It would also be useful to know what height can realistically be used there. Thanks!

Does anyone have experience installing drawer slides under the MALM top panel? Yes, it is possible, but you need to reinforce the supporting frame. I recommend attaching sturdy wooden battens on the sides to mount the drawer slides. The height depends on the foot height or the surface area for support. It is important not to overload the slides, as the structure could become unstable. It is advisable to create a sketch beforehand and measure carefully. If you follow these points, you can significantly increase your storage space.

It is advisable to create a sketch beforehand and measure precisely. Absolutely, without a sketch you can quickly lose track! I installed the drawer slides myself and attached two narrow drawers underneath the MALM top panel. 🙂 A real eye-catcher! Make sure the runners are installed straight. Then it works perfectly, and you get a lot of extra space!
