Hello everyone, I am currently considering modifying my IKEA Malm desk because the original offers too little storage and flexibility for my needs. Has anyone here had experience with Malm desk modifications? I am particularly interested in which materials and tools have proven effective, how simple or complex the modification is for non-professionals, and whether any specific technical challenges have come up (e.g., stability, surface treatment). Any advice on extensions like cable management or ergonomic adjustments would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your tips and feedback!

I reinforced my MALM desk by adding extra drawers underneath. It is important to use a good jigsaw and sandpaper to smooth the cut edges. Stability is not an issue as long as you don’t remove too much material.

For additional storage space, you can stack MALM dressers modularly. There are also compatible connector fittings from IKEA that make the assembly easier. For cable management, I recommend simple cable ducts.

Hello Thaddeusmo, your question is very well thought out! In general, I recommend first carefully measuring and documenting all dimensions and existing parts before you start. For MALM modifications, the surface is often veneered, which means you need to be careful when cutting to avoid chipping. For beginners, I suggest using a fine-toothed saw blade and sanding carefully. In terms of ergonomics, you can, for example, install height-adjustable feet or connect the tabletop with an additional support. Stability issues rarely occur as long as the main structure is maintained. Cable management can be easily handled with clamp and Velcro solutions. If you want, I can also share some tutorials with you.

That's great that you want to modify the MALM! I've done that myself and installed additional storage space and drawer slides. 🙂 It's always important to measure carefully and proceed step by step. The look becomes much more personalized, and the pride afterward is unbeatable! Good luck!

For working on MALM, I recommend tools such as a fine-toothed jigsaw or a router for extensive modifications. Materials for reinforcement include laminated wood strips or plywood panels, as they are more stable than particleboard. Be careful with water exposure, as the veneer can delaminate. Heavy loads should be supported with additional bracing.

how simple or complex the conversion is for amateurs
The difficulty level varies greatly. Small modifications like installing cable outlets are simple, while more complex alterations require experience in furniture making.

Summary: Good planning and patient work are essential.
