Hello everyone,

I am currently considering how to better secure my IKEA KALLAX shelf units against slipping. I came across the idea of using foam rubber as an anti-slip solution under the feet or shelves of the KALLAX units. My question to you is: Has anyone had practical experience using foam rubber as an anti-slip material specifically for KALLAX shelves? How well does the material adhere to laminate or hardwood flooring? Is it durable and does it provide enough grip to keep the shelf stable even under heavier loads? Any advice or tips on thickness, adhesive, or alternatives are also welcome. Thanks in advance for your input!

whether the foam rubber has any long-term negative effects on the floor or possibly leaves stains

This is important to consider from a technical perspective. Natural rubber and some synthetic foams can cause discoloration on sensitive flooring due to plasticizers when in prolonged contact. Therefore, I recommend using certified foam rubber sheets or special non-slip materials that do not contain plasticizers.

Additionally, the material should be checked regularly, especially when exposed to direct sunlight or high humidity. If these conditions are met, I don’t see any risk for laminate or hardwood flooring.

In short: Glue 3mm (1/8 inch) thick foam rubber under the KALLAX feet, clean the surface, done. Nothing slips there anymore. Alternatively, use double-sided tape with anti-slip properties.

So far, no stains on my laminate.

Hello Renpra, I also tried foam rubber on my KALLAX, and I have to say: it’s really great! 🙂

The grip is excellent, the shelf doesn’t slip at all anymore, and it makes everything much safer, especially when there are children in the house. I chose a fairly thick one (4mm (0.16 inches)), which really gives the shelf a solid base.

What I find especially cool: foam rubber is super easy to work with, and with a good pair of scissors or a utility knife, it can be cut quickly. And if you want to reposition it later, it can also be removed without leaving any residue.

Good luck testing!

This is an important note! Fortunately, I haven’t had any stains, but I fixed the foam rubber with double-sided tape and make sure not to stay in the same spot too long without cleaning. If stains do occur, I would probably switch to a different type of rubber.

Also, a tip: I cut the foam rubber strips to fit exactly so that no edges stick out to cause a tripping hazard.

I would recommend also paying attention to special anti-slip mats ... made of SBR rubber or similar, as these are designed more professionally for such applications

That’s true. Depending on how much load your KALLAX will bear, a higher-quality material might make more sense. For light to moderate use, however, foam rubber is a very practical alternative due to its simplicity and low cost.

Let me summarize: Closed-cell foam rubber is a more affordable and easier-to-install option that provides good slip resistance when applied correctly. For sensitive floors, the material choice should be limited to certified, non-toxic types to avoid damage or stains. Depending on the frequency of use and level of stress, professional anti-slip mats can also be considered.

This overview is very helpful to me—thanks to everyone involved for your tips! 🙂
