hermesjon1 Aug 2016 08:17I am currently considering whether there are any practical alternatives to the standard Billy shelves from Ikea. My question is whether it is possible to use sturdier or more customizable shelves that can fit into the Billy units without much effort. I am particularly interested in whether there are options made from different materials that are more durable or have a higher load capacity than the usual particleboard shelves, and if there are possibilities to improve design or functionality. Does anyone have experience with alternatives or know ways to modify the Billy shelves without completely losing the original appearance?

whether it is possible to use stronger or more customized shelves, for example Such alternatives do exist in principle, but precise fitting is crucial. Particleboard shelves like those used in the Billy series are affordable and manufactured in standard sizes. However, solid wood or plywood panels can be an alternative if they are cut to the right dimensions. It should be kept in mind though that the benefits of such alternatives are proportional to the effort and costs involved. Simply being “stronger” is not always automatically better if you do not fully modify the shelving unit.In addition to the options mentioned by enrique7, there are slatted shelves made of MDF or HDF that can be custom ordered and have higher compressive strength than standard Billy shelves.
Furthermore, some suppliers offer custom-made shelves with beech, oak, or ash veneer, which are both aesthetically and functionally superior. The shelves typically have a standard thickness of 16 mm (0.63 inches) and should fit easily into the shelving system.
However, it is important to ensure that the drill holes and attachment points match or can be adjusted accordingly.

That’s brilliant! 🙂 I had my Billy shelves fitted with solid real wood boards, and the result is incredibly sturdy and looks really classy! You can immediately feel the difference compared to the standard particleboard shelves. If you want something truly durable, I can only recommend it! And: The look takes the whole shelving unit to a completely different level! 🙂

install solid hardwood floors Solid wood offers higher durability but is also more sensitive to moisture and temperature changes. labau schrieb:
cut multiplex floors Multiplex has the advantage of being laminated in three layers, making it more dimensionally stable than solid wood. It is a good budget-friendly alternative. For both options, the right surface finish is important, especially if the shelving is visible.Similar topics
