Hello everyone,

I have a question that’s been bothering me quite a bit: Are there actually alternatives to the Ikea Brimnes drawer slides?

I own several pieces of furniture from the Brimnes series and I'm not entirely satisfied with the original drawer slides—whether it’s because of the quality, smoothness of operation, or durability. I’m looking for other options that can either be retrofitted or installed instead to improve the functionality and feel when opening and closing.

Who has experience with compatible or even better drawer slides that can be used in these pieces? Are there specific brands, models, or DIY solutions? It’s also important to me whether the effort required for such a replacement is reasonable, as I would prefer not to alter the entire drawer or cabinet structure if possible.

Thanks in advance for your experiences and tips!

Hello Neoflo67,

your question about alternatives to the Ikea Brimnes drawer slides is quite complex from a technical perspective. The original slides are typically simple metal rails with ball bearings and are not particularly high quality, which often results in clicking noises and slight warping over time.

If you are looking for better smoothness and functionality, upgrading to ball-bearing full-extension drawer slides is generally recommended. Here are some considerations:

- Full-extension slides with a soft-close mechanism are significantly higher quality, provide gentle closing, and reduce the risk of fingers getting pinched for a longer time.
- Many of these slides come from brands specializing in furniture fittings, such as Hettich, Blum, or Grass.
- For replacement, you must ensure that the dimensions of both the drawer and the cabinet are definitely compatible. Ikea furniture sometimes has unusual dimensions that can make installation more difficult.
- DIY modifications to the drawer, such as drilling new holes or altering the cabinet, are almost always necessary.

One possible step would be to measure the depth and width of your drawers accurately and then look for suitable full-extension slides. After that, check whether the mounting points are compatible or how they might be adjusted.

By the way, some users also report cheap alternative side-mount slides from hardware stores, but these often do not meet quality expectations.

I’m curious: Is your main issue related to smoothness, durability, or something else? That way I can offer more targeted advice.

Haha, very accurately described 😄! I also think that the Brimnes drawer slides from Ikea aren’t exactly top-notch. But hey, Ikea often focuses on low prices rather than high-end hardware for your drawers.

What helped me was simply going to your local hardware store and looking for classic full-extension ball-bearing drawer slides that you can then adjust yourself. Sure, it takes a bit of tinkering, but anyone who enjoys DIY will be happy here.

- Smoother operation
- Better stability
- Often soft-close included (a dream!)

Yes, I would say there are ALTERNATIVES—you just have to be willing to put in a little effort.

If you don’t feel like drilling and measuring, buying the original parts again might be the most convenient, but less satisfying.

To add a few clear points regarding alternatives to the Brimnes drawer slides:

- The original slides are usually side-mounted ball bearing runners, often relatively thin and less robustly installed.
- Common alternatives are full-extension slides (also called telescopic slides), which allow full drawer extension and often come with soft-close features.
- Compatibility is critical: the drawer dimensions (width, height, depth) must match the new slides exactly, or adjustments will be necessary.
- For the Brimnes, it may be necessary to mount the slides on the inside of the cabinet sides or even make minor wood modifications.
- Well-known manufacturers include Blum, Hettich, Grass. Various models are available with load capacities ranging from 15 to 40 kg (33 to 88 lbs).
- Installation guides and assembly videos show that such a conversion usually takes 1–2 hours.

Therefore: yes, alternatives do exist, but they require precise planning and usually a certain amount of effort. If this seems challenging, it may be worth considering consulting a professional or sticking with the original parts.

Honestly, I’m skeptical about that. Why settle for the standard drawer slides at all when alternatives offer real added value? The Ikea segment often follows a “good enough” approach – cheap and cheerful, but neither durable nor truly good.

I recommend simply replacing the conventional drawer slides if quality is important to you. And this doesn’t only mean expensive brand names; verified, high-quality products from the hardware store also work well. Most Ikea furniture uses standard dimensions that can be adapted with a bit of effort.

With minimal effort, you can install a full-extension soft-close slide that operates much more smoothly and extends the drawer’s lifespan. Yes, it takes some time and patience, but it pays off in the long run.

If you just complain without action, you won’t get luxury for your money. So pick up the screwdriver and put an end to Ikea drawer frustration!
