Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into whether there are recognized and practical alternatives to the IKEA Brimnes furniture, especially when used as a base for DIY projects. The Brimnes series seems quite popular due to its combination of price, materials, and ease of assembly, but I would like to know if there are comparable or even better models from other manufacturers or custom-built options that are more suitable for creative modifications or conversions. Perhaps someone has experience with other furniture that has similar dimensions, layouts, and materials but offers more flexibility in design or better stability? I look forward to your recommendations and tips!

In discussions about alternatives to Brimnes for DIY projects, I believe it’s important to look beyond just the furniture type itself. Brimnes furniture is relatively affordable and easy to work with, but from a practical standpoint, using standardized plywood panels or custom-made wooden frames can sometimes be the more sensible option. The claim that IKEA furniture is always the best base could definitely be questioned. Why not plan and build custom pieces right from the start?
The topic of environment and sustainability also often comes up: Brimnes has a foil coating that is not environmentally friendly and difficult to dispose of. Turning toward solid wood or at least FSC-certified products might be a more responsible choice.
It’s also worth noting that modifications to Brimnes can be quite limited due to its specific construction, such as the folded back panels or fixed carcass structure.
In my experience, careful planning considering the materials and, above all, the intended use is well worth the effort.

So, I took on a small DIY project using a Brimnes base and was impressed by how easy it was, as well as the little challenges it presented. 😊
If you want something truly original, I would recommend the Kallax system. These units are so versatile, almost like building blocks for adults. You can paint them, cover them with materials, or simply assemble them differently.
If you prefer a more rustic look, try using old furniture pieces from bulk waste collection—this adds a really cool vintage charm. Of course, you’ll need to do more handiwork, but the fun is guaranteed. 😉
Whatever you decide to do, remember: the journey is the goal!
